What new plants are you trying this year?

I've bought far too many plants this year, most are ones I buy each year or have had before, but there are a few new ones I am looking forward to trying out: Ornamental Tiger Cub Corn, Phytolacca americana 'Silberstein' variegated Pokeweed, Ulmus parvifolia 'Variegata' Elm, Forsythia koreana Kumson, Viburnum trilobum Red Wing and also Sambucus Ambucus Black Beauty Elderberry. I'm looking forward to seeing how they do, especially the Red Wing and the Pokeweed. I'm probably going to purchase a Bell-flower Cherry tree also (I think that is what is outside the office where I work & if I were the lawbreaking sort I'd plantnap it).

Going to try a flowering Cherry tree that I purchased from the Callaway Gardens plant sale last weekend while attending the Gardening Symposium there. Also have two varieties of weeping Kousa Dogwood that i bought last fall and are in pots, still looking for the right location. Same situation with several JM's, Camellias, Hydrangeas & Native Azaleas that need to be in the ground. The garden is becoming so crowded, it's hard to find a good location for anything large or that will become fairly large.

I can still squeeze in small perennials and some bulbs and have already ordered a lot of plants, that aren't available locally and am in the process of sowing about 100 packs of seed, mostly shade tolerant perennials, some that I received from the NARGS Seedex this past week. Tricyrtis, Native Lily and Iris, Hepatica, Trout Lily, Helleborus, Cyclamen, Arisaema, Arum, Sundews, and a host of minor plants that I want to try.
It's going to be a busy Spring, I'm afraid and the remaining lawn is in serious danger!

Oh, my goodness. I think I've got about 70 new plants from see in already!!
Right now I'm testing a red creeping ruellia I purchased on eBay late last summer. It's been given thumbs up at UGA trials, but I have no idea how long they had it in the ground...it's been in pots and most are still alive...
Almost all the vegetables I plan on growing this year are new varieties except for a few types of spring radish and some bush beans. I LOVE to try new veggies!
Hoping to trade for a few plants I do not already have growing in my garden. Attempting to avoid buying too many things because I need to make more garden beds before I plant too much more than I have already seeded!!!

We bought some brand new introductions from Nurseries Caroliniana for our church garden. A beautiful variegated and supposedly very hardy jasmine for the memorial gardens. Some of the newer (last year) tiny, shrubby dwarf crepe myrtles to try. Rita's Gold a brand new tender fern for hanging baskets which has proven OUTSTANDING. It has more cold tollerance than other basket type ferns, although of course, not much below 40. It loves sunshine and multiplies very nicely. It isn't even on the market quite yet. I think it will appear this April. I highly recommend this plant for the fern lover. You can buy a very small plant and have a huge full basket in about a month or two!!
There's a new tender alpina which is variegated but not striped, more blotchy and it has much more chartreuse in the leaf. Could you imagine Rita's Gold hanging in a basket, and then a lovely pot of this Alpina in a large mixed container sitting close by?

Seniorita Rosalita is a Proven Winner cultivar. I think you have to buy the plants each year. But one plant becomes a nice clump. Salvia farinacea Victoria beside it. The other dwarf cleome are also Proven Winners. They were also striking, though not as dense a clump (slightly larger flowers). As I noted, someone thought it would be a good idea to pick them. While the taller cleome can be nice, they take much more room and, in my experience, soon become seedy. Seniorita has been blooming three months and is more beautiful than ever at about 26 inches.

Have planted 6-7 of Martin's garlic varieties, catawissa onion, and a pearl walking-onion. Also am doing a new Wisconsin 55 tomato, and black cherry tomato from Martin. (You'll love his posts in the Allium forum!) I have about a hundred kinds of food & flower seed packets that are new to me, most to get seeded in the next few weeks. I have 3 kinds of early cucumber started already - spacemaster, a sweet slicing cuke, and a pickle cuke. I'v only grown lemon cukes so far - and will again - but am eager to try new varieties of something so easy. Greek Salad & Tatziki anyone? Thai basil has sprouted so I'll do savory stir-fry too. Am trying some purple sweet peppers, since I had my first ever year of success last year with Anaheims and Jalapeno from seed. Several are still alive - after being dug & moved indoors last October. They are looking spindly and weak now, but in my imagination: they can't wait to get back outside, leaf out & get producing again! (The eggplant didn't make it, rats, but I've got a couple kinds of seed to get started ASAP) A couple of the wintered-over Peppers are out on the back porch now - to begin hardening off for their next palnting, since we're having a very pleasant early spring in Oregon. I have several interesting squashes to seed - and am glad a neighbor, and another newbie who I'm helping get started in food growing have both has allowed me to use their space - so I can go nuts growing all this stuff! I look forward to receiving a box of dahlia tubers froma gardenWebber - a neighbor across the street has agreed to let me plant her whole front yard with them so all can enjoy about a dozen I've never brefore grown. I'll help her with cutting and mulching to keep 'em going, as this neighbor says she is new to growing flowers - but is amazing with veggies. Am happy about some good garden trades so far this spring - got a variagated sage, and 2 passion fruit vines are tucked in. Finally planted some stuff from Swaps last September. Amazing what can survive ice and drought in plastic pots! Some golden hops and sweet peas will hoepfully compete happy for fence climbing space. Lots more is new to my little garden this year - and Lord Help Me - I'm about to do an order from 4 Seasons! (Who can resist a deal on Asparagus and loads of Greek Windflowers, anyway?) Enjoyed reading all your plant scores - and have never even heard of some of those! Maybe next year... Let us know how yours turn out - and post pix!

We do have similar taste in plants!! My Ninebark Diablo also had a rough beginning. It was planted in a very sandy area ... mostly sand and I threw as much manure etc in there as I could. It sort of just sat there the first year, and I kept ammending the soil. It is 3 years later and the soil is still very sandy, but it has filled out nicely and is starting to look much more impressive. I was inspired to buy it after I saw one on a local garden tour. The one I saw must have been at least 5 years old, quite mature, and SO impressive when in full bloom ... a real show-stopper!! I have Sambucus Black Lace, another dark foliage one, and I really love it. It is also in it's third summer and starting to fill out nicely. The dark elders are really striking! I have Weigela "My Monet" which has stayed really small for me. I know it is supposed to be compact, but I thought it would get a little bigger than it has. Still, I like the variegated foliage :) New to me this year are some more (and different) Coneflowers, some new Daylilies ... I'm trying to add more tall bearded iris and lilies to the garden this summer as well. I just got a new rose "Monsieur le Capitaine Louis Frere", a beautiful red hybrid perpetual which I'm very excited about although I doubt it will bloom this year. Also adding a couple low-growing sedums, "Angelina" and "Chocolate Drop". Looking for "Bertram Anderson" as well, if I can find it locally. I haven't been out to look at local nurseries much yet, not enough time, but hopefully soon so I can get them before everything gets bumped up to the larger pots (and larger prices)! We have a climbing honeysuckle which is gorgeous, but you have to keep a close eye as the wasps like making their nests in there, and then the leaves fill out and you can't see it unless you bang into it (ouch). We also have a Climbing Hydrangea, which is quite vigorous and needs a lot of pruning each Spring but is quite the show-stopper in full bloom as well! I love the couple varieties of coreopsis that I have. If I can get them to over-winter (ie they are hardy here, which many aren't), then they really are tough plants and dependable bloomers. So bright and cheerful. I've been wanting to try Silene, I have seeds for "Starburst" which I traded for on a whim but haven't planted yet. I don't know much about Silene, never grown it before. Does it spread or seed around? Low grower or a taller plant? Anyone have a picture of Silene as a plant?

I'm trying so many new things this year I don't know if I can list them all! I started last Fall changing my big vegetable garden over to a hummingbird-butterfly garden. These are what I've added so far. Vines Honeysuckle - Scarlet Dropmore Cross Vine- Tangerine Beauty Perennials Penstemon - several different kinds Lobelia - Ruby Slippers Verbascum Clary Sage Shrubs Variegated Weigela Wine and Roses Weiglea Annuals Lady in Red Salvia Forrest Fire Salvia Shrimp PLant Cigar Plant Hanging Basket of Million Bells Mr President Canna Nicotiana Cleome Scarlet Snapdragons Ipomopsis I am trying to make this place a hummer heaven!!! I just spotted my first hummer of the season last evening. She didn't touch a flower but just briefly flew into some green vines that hang on the overgrown shrubs behind a fence at the back of my yard. I wonder if she was gathering webs for a nest or something.

Well, GGG, I just had to go look up 'Rita's Gold'! It does look very exciting. This is a good thread to pick up new ideas even if I didn't have any of my own!!
