I have dug up frogs twice (not the same as this one but a similar size) when digging holes for new plants in the garden. They seem to live underground in the soil. We don't have water nearby either.

That's a great picture! We have frogs and are not near water unless you count all the ponds on the farm.

Yes I have wonderful little toads , need to check on the difference pf toads and frogs ?? . We have no water except the pool. Mine are so cute but it has given me a fright when I grabbed one while gathering leaves etc !! I don't know who leaped higher..LOL. Caroline

I see a frog sometimes in my garden. The only water I have is few birdbaths. They seem to prefer one particular flower bed. At least that is where I see them.

I'm no expert on the matter, but frogs and toads do not hibernate the same. Are you sure you have frogs?

Toads can bury themselves in the ground to overwinter, whereas this frog needs deep, non-freezing water to hibernate. Both, of course, need a source of still water for breeding.

As far as I know, there are no ponds large enough to sustain a breeding population in this neighborhood. This one must have hopped quite a distance to get to my place.

Here in Simi CA we have Pacific Tree Frogs. They only need water to breed. We had "Bubbles," a male a bit smaller than a quarter, who croaked so loudly we had to shut all of our windows at night! We have not seen any frogs, however, in the last three years. We don't use chemicals, so I fear there may be some sort of a frog disease going around, and our area has been affected.

i have had more frogs in my garden this year than ever. they are so cute! i almost stomped on one today while i was snail stomping. I was cleaning up a pile of boards i am going to make benches out of. they had about 50 snail all over them. so i was stomping away when the little brown frog jumped and bout gave me a heartattack. I've had more grasshoppers, cuke beetle, than ever also.

Last year we had a little green tree frog we called 10:00 Charlie. Every night he'd land in one particular spot on our picture window at exactly 10:00. The window is second story and our walls are stucco. You'd think the stucco would have hurt his soft skin, but must not have.

We always have lots of little toads. We have to be careful where we step at night in the driveway. They love to hang around under the yard light (big sodium vapor thing on a very high pole that the county puts in out here in the country) where they can catch bugs. I have NO IDEA where they find enough water for their business. There are no "bodies of water" around here if you don't count the dog dish or the dispenser in the chicken pen.
