Mine is sort of bonsaiing itself in one of those color pots I bought as H.D. last summer. It's planted with variegated Acorus and a burgundy coral bells. Nice combo I wouldn't have came up with. The G.B. has put up with 33f this winter without dropping leaves or flowers. Came with a nice pot and metal stand for $9. Good deal.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm quite careful with watering. It is on an irrigration system but I check the moisture in the soil with a soil tester from time to time and adjust the watering accordingly. What I did not mention in my original post is that quite a few of the leaves went brown and fell off recently. So it is possible it has also got a bit burnt. In the summer it is protected to some extent by a giant birds of paradise above it. I did not realize that the trajectory of the sun changes to a point where in the winter there is a lot more direct sunlight and it can get hot here even in the winter (it was in the 80s a few days ago). Hopefully it will gow back more leaves in the spring.

Unfortunately, two extremes don't make a happy medium. Yes, the glazed pot was probably a bad idea, and soggy soil doesn't sound good either. I think you need to raise humidity but keep the rooting medium aerated. Fuchsias don't have stolons. Phygelius, which are often mistaken for Fuchsias, do. Fuchsias do root so readily that low-growing branches often take root; that is fairly normal; I don't think that counts as a true "stolon" tho. I'm not sure but I think they are capable of root-suckering too. I've had vegetative offsets mysteriously show up next to other plants, usually from broken branches but sometimes I suspect from me digging around the roots. Unless you are close to the Pacific (especially if you are in southern California) this does not seem like a good time of year to start Fuchsias, except possibly the heat-loving triphylla types like Gartenmeister Bonstedt (that's "Gartenmeister's" full name). Try to find as cool a spot as you can. If it is G. Bonstedt, try it again if she doesn't mind. One possibility are gel rooting mediums. Those are supposed to work well with Fuchsias (and apparently not so much other things), and they'll keep it hydrated. Oddly enough, gels or for that matter straight water are better aerated than soggy soil! Make sure the starts are kept in a SHADY location, like the north side of the house, and because California's humidity is generally quite low I think you'll need something like a coldframe or other form of protection to raise humidity. To answer your question your start isn't necessarily beyond hope. I always worry when they lose their only leaves but I've certainly had bare twigs root! Fuchsias WANT to root. I'm starting to see a few buds that seem to be sizing up.... still a long way from blooming but i have hope! I removed the drip line and am allowing the soil to dry out a bit. It's got to be either that or too big a jolt of fertilizer on the plant shocking it. I hope it recovers! I hope it's ok if I post another picture, I know sometimes it can be annoying if your internet connection is slow..... This is the latest photo. I know, I know, there's still some water out of the bottom, but it's drying out. It has grown alot, the top three leaves of the unruly rubber tree are new and the asparagus fern is onto the concrete now. Winter should nip their colonizing ways! My mom is the source of the R.tree, she's such a sucker for a homeless plant and tries to save all the prunings she gets, unfortunately they all root! I said I was going to leave this one out to freeze, but now I'm not so sure. I read the post on fushia cuttings. I may try a couple myself now that the plant isn't blooming and take them in for the winter instead of the RT.
