Hardy Fuchsias--are we doing OK????

HI,

We are in Zone 5 (Boston area) and we had ordered 3 hardy fuchsias from Dutch Gardens and they are all healthy and

now about 10 inches high (they'd like a bit more water!!!)

and some of them have buds sticking out of the ends of

their stems.

Is this the correct timing? Should we have had 2 foot tall

plants by now (mid-July)?? Will these guys get much taller

before the october frost? Will I be getting fleurs till

the frost hits?

Any advice from thems-in-the-know would certainly be

appreciated (a new hardy-fuchsia grower)

would need more information; do you have the names of the plants? Are they in pots? Suggest you have a look in FAQs for some of your answers.

Did they say they will be ok for the winter in your zone? What do they consider "hardy"? Like the last person asked, "are they in pots"?

Are the buds coming out the end flower buds? Are the plants uprights? Bushy? I don't see why they won't bloom until frost. Are you fertilizing? If so, what with?

I don't know about dogs, but our cats avoid our few Pels, especially the citronella scented one. They just don't like the strong scent...so much so that we used to place leaves where we didn't want them to go when they were new to the family. I have a hard time getting mine to bloom, so I can't help you there...I keep small ones inside during the winter, then plant them outside in large containers for the summer, taking cuttings in the fall again for bringing inside.

It really does depend on which salvia you have. Most of the blue and purple ones are perennial, because most of them come from Eastern Europe. Most of the red ones are more tropical, so it isn't that they are annuals, it's just that they can't tolerate freezing temperatures. There are exceptions, though, as salvia greggii comes in red and fuschia, and it is hardy, as is hot lips, which is red and white. And salvia guaranitica, which includes Black & Blue, can tolerate freezing but isn't hardy in colder zones. That said, my salvia coccinea does re-seed, as does salvia subrotunda. But if they sprout too early, the frost will kill them. Wintersowing provides a warmer environment, which might encourage them to sprout earlier than seeds that fall on the ground. To be safe, I would say do them with your annuals, or else plant some seeds now, and if the containers don't have any sprouts, add some seeds when it is a bit warmer. OK, I got some very healthy, mature bell and sweet pepper plants hardening off now... looks like night time temps will be reliably 50*F or higher starting next week or so. What do you think, can I put them out in Wall'o'waters once I think the below 50*F nights more or less over? Maybe some plastic on the ground to help out as well? I settled on Wisconsin Lakes (bell), Sheep Nose pimento, Napoleon (bell) and Bull's nose (bell), plus two types of hot pepper. I'd love grow more just to experiment, but I don't have a very big space. I will be sure to report back here on how it works! It's been a rather nasty spring for solanacea plants... hope things will be better in the upcoming weeks.

Um, we were talking about rules on another thread and whilst I feel rules are often there to be broken, I do attempt to follow a vague rule of thumb when it comes to moving, dividing or mucking about with plants...and that is - everything which flowers before midsummer can be easily moved in autumn...while plants which are late to flower (after21st June) are best left till spring. While some plants might be impervious (hemerocallis|), asters are usually unhappy to be meddled with in autumn - although I will make an exception if they are actually in full growth...as I have no qualms about lifting plants at the height of their bloom season...when they can click over back into root and vegetative growth when flowering growth is cut back. So...I would be moving the hibiscus (syriacus?) as soon as leaf break occurs in May.

Well-yes, we are in zone 5/6-and these (whichever the
Dutch Gardens calls 'Hardy Fuchsias') are supposed to be
hardy in zone 5. They are quite bushy and about 1 foot tall
and in the ground--no pests-and quite a few tiny tiny (about 1/4 inch) buds on them.
Thanks for asking about the fertilizer, I've been fertiliazing maybe once per month with the 'Algoflash'
soluble fertilizer--should do more???

Oh yes--they are upright-not pendulous.
The plants look very healthy, although small. They
don't get much sun per day--maybe 2 hours dappled sun
each day. I don't know if they get direct sun or not
(I work 7:30 a m till 3:30 pm and by then the sun is
behind the neighbor's house)

I guess I've got many other REAL problems. It is just
that I've lived in this area for 20 years and have NEVER
seen any fuschias in ANYONE's gardens-and I've seen a
lot of gardens in this area. So, I'm treading unknown ground.

I would treat them as annuals in your zone, sounds a bit optimistic to me to say they are hardy in zone 5 - Kath:)

Do you have Cape Fuchsias(phygelius)If so they grow outside and I do not know if they are hardy in your area.Look up Cape fuchsias or better yet Phygelius on Google and see what you have.Jessie

I should let you know that these plants are now about 15 inches tall and bushy and full of flowers--seem very happy
in the dappled shade which they are getting. I was thinking
of just putting a 6 inch heap of mulch over the top of
the whole bed for the winter. Will check the cape fuchsia info. thanks for the suggestion!
