Tropicalismo! The Book Is Here!

Post Lady brought the book I ordered, Tropicalismo, by Pam Baggett.

It's smaller than I expected, but crammed with tropical plants in alphabetical order, most of which I recognized, some new to me. She gives how-tos and combos for each. Some of the plants are hardy only in zones 9 & 10, some 7-10. Many are available as annuals everywhere in early summer.

She gives ideas for great combos using Persian Shield, one of my favs in the tropical garden.

I already have Richard Iversen's book on Victorian style gardening with tropical plants.

Persian Shield is one of my faves too, but I grow it as a house plant. I have a rather strong disinclination to growing annuals, (at least the majority of them) and I haven't ventured in to the use of tropicals in the garden. Uh-oh...I may have to look in to these books you speak of!

Persian Shield one of the plants I've been looking for, it always seems to elude me, when I hear some garden center has it, by the time I get there they've just sold the last plant. I think it is one of the prettiest foliage plants I've ever seen. I'll keep looking maybe I'll find it in the houseplant section of one of the garden centers I go to.
Nell, both books sound really interesting I'll have to see if our library has them.

The newer editions are useful (the ones with the color drawings of the plants), but what has struck me is how little some of the plant descriptions have changed over the years. I have some old editions (like the one with the sprial binding) and the wording of some plant descriptions has not changed since that time. Of course many more plants have been added along with new information and I just point this out as an interesting sidelight in general. The book is a valuable resource for gardeners. My copies usually have dirt smudges on some pages.

Gee, I may have to get a new Ball Book, mine's from the 70's. Sounds like there's a lot of good stuff in the new one. Yeah, Dave, I know what you're going to say. I learned to can from my mother-in-law who raised ten kids on stuff she either open kettled or water bathed in a washtub over an open fire in the back yard. Guess she was just lucky, cause they all survived. I thought I was pretty progressive with my Ball Book, but there's some scary stuff out there now. I used to spend my vacations pressure canning salmon on a vintage gas stove in a cabin on the lake while DH went fishing, surprisingly the marriage survived too. Annie's salsa rocks, just made the fourth batch! Put that in the Ball Book !

Thanks Jas...yes staples was selling them $300 off so I ordered one but still don't know if I will keep it for him. I didn't get to make the bread yet unfortunately...got busy talking with my sis in law who is in the hospital. I WILL be trying is soon though and promise to let you know how it goes. I seem to be doing my Hallowe'en reading early this year, having this month finished two rather large books, both dealing with supernatural themes. I absolutely lovedThe Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, and recommend it to anyone interested in "haunted house" stories. The book also paints a very interesting picture of how life in rural England changed after World War II. A few days ago I finished Peter Straub's sprawling (and quite gruesome) Floating Dragon. I am sorry to report I found it a bit disappointing, especially compared to his earlier novel Ghost Story, which is one of my favorite scary books. I prefer quiet, unnerving scares to gore. Also, the two books were very similar in their themes, which makes a comparison of the two inevitable. Hopefully my next reading choice will be a bit more suitable for summer. The brutal heat has settled on us, unfortunately. I am being a stubborn goat and not turning on my air conditioner until June.

You should be able to find a Persian Shield in a houseplant section or at a greenhouse. I'd keep your eyes peeled over the winter months too if you're willing to have one as a house plant for a while! If I had one at the moment I'd be happy to share a cutting, but I don't.
