Figs in wire baskets

Hi all,

I'm a novice, and, of course, I have a question.

Background: My previous two attempts to grow figs came to nothing, 'cause both times gofers ate the roots of young trees before they produced a single fruit. This time I've decided to play smart and plant two new trees in wire baskets. So I made the 2x2ft enclosures out of 2ft wide hardware cloth.

Questions: Do I have to make real baskets by closing the enclosures from the bottom( do gofers go lower than 2ft)? Is 2x2ft a reasonable size?

Thanks for your help and regards. GW forums rock(I've been reading for a long time before registering)
