Sequoia sempervirens care

I just received a Coast Redwood from the internet and am not sure how to care for it. There are not many sites around that say how to care for a young coast redwood seedling and the ones that do have different ways on how to care for one so it is getting confusing on what to do.
I currently put it outside in the daytime and bring it into the house at night.
It is currently in the 4" pot that it came in and I am unsure on what I should use to water it and what extra care is needed to keep it healthy over the winter.

I live in Brookeville, Maryland

When it first hit the trade, it was mistakenly called 'Loma Prieta'. Several places were calling it such. It was also briefly called 'Stricta'. The conifer society contacted me and asked if they could use a picture of mine on their website. I gave them the information that I posted above, and they mistakenly added "Mt." to the name. So yes.. names can change. The recent renaming of large numbers of plants due to DNA testing has been huge. In this case it would just be nice to honor the man who found, propagated and named the plant, by giving it the name he chose for it. 'Loma Prieta Spike'

I just went out in the rain to take a picture of my 'Procumbans' where I let one shoot go vertical. (The trunk in the upper left) The needles are wider and shorter than on the species. A little different color too. I really should clean out those dead needles that just dropped. I've been busy cleaning up ice storm damage. I will get to it when I can. Ice can do a lot of damage to a garden more mature than most. Here's a picture of the 'Cantab'. The bark is softer than the species Sequoia and a Sequoiadendron. Mike

The tree is small, at under 1 foot fall and 1 foot wide. Up until a month ago, I had it in a half gallon container and under 16 hours per day of artificial light. I transfered it into a 5 gallon pot and under sunlight after I noticed the symptoms described in my original post. When I transplanted, the roots looked OK. The leafs in the picture grew 12 months ago. All leafs on the plant are like this. I see dormant stem buds, but no above soil growth. There may be root growth under the soil. When watering, the topsoil eroded a bit and I noticed a few new, thin and white surface level roots. Should I wait for growth in the spring to see if new growth is infected, before spraying with a fungicide?

Amending of planting holes and small beds creates problems with how water moves into and out of these amended areas. In organized trials growth of test subjects in unamended control groups has been better than that of those that were planted with amendments. This pattern of findings dates back as far as the late 1960s. The reason many think amending of back-fill improves results is the plants in the amended holes don't always die, and top growth can be great after their roots escape the amended zone and they get into the unmodified soil outside the hole or small bed. Showing that they should have been planted in the existing soil in the first place, without modification - other than loosening and aeration, which is the main benefit of digging in amendments at planting - it is the aeration caused by the digging that new plantings may respond to, rather than the presence of the amendments themselves. Of course where you have managed to improve the overall humus content of a large area plants put there will probably tend to enjoy this - depending on what kinds of plants they are - as long as they are not on the edge of an amended bed - where there will be interactions with unchanged soil around the bed, same as in a small planting hole. In general you don't want a soil organic content above 5%. More than this can be counterproductive. And in permanent plantings you always have the problem of organic material dug into soil decomposing and filtering away, long before the life of the planting is over. With flowering annual and vegetable beds, that are redone frequently this can be kept up with. Also wild ancestors of these types tend to be from recently disturbed soils that may be rich in organic litter. With most other groups if you instead plant in existing soil and mulch afterward you are following the natural model of the forest and woodland.

how big is it???

it should probably be up-potted to at least a one gal ...

trees usually do NOT need a lot of water in winter .. they are not houseplants.. nor annuals and perennials.. that like soggy wet media ...

a pic would sure get you more info .. based on the actual plant you have in hand ...

i am not sure i would ever place a 4 inch pot outdoors.. there is not enough media to protect it from the vagaries of mother nature .... most likely it came from a greenhouse ... and i would never put a 4 inch pot in sun .. to easy to cook the roots ...

and again.. it is not a houseplant.. so i dont know why it should spend too much time indoors ... why do you bring it in every night.. is it not zone appropriate???? .. which is what bboy is probably wondering about ...

at a minimum.. i would pot the 4 inch pot.. in a one gal pot .. pot and all as they say .. just for stability of pot temps and wind .. i dont know these conifers.. nor your zone.. so i dont know if now is the proper time to repot the thing ...

and i would not fed it.. nor fertilize it ... during winter ...

will it be planted in the ground.. come proper planting season????

Here is what it looks like currently.
The stake in the pot is about a foot tall.
At the time of this photo it is cloudy and very damp.
I bring the plant in each night so no animals get at it. The zone it is in is a reasonable planting zone but I plan to plant it in the ground next spring. This is the third day I have had this plant.

well.. you use water ... [pun intended] ... no fert ..

it looks awful damp ... lift in your hand.. and weigh it.. let it lose half its water weight.. before you water it again ...

does the second pot have drainage.. or is that just to hold it up???

bottom line.. its a tree .. if you dont drown it.. you should be all set ...

but from your words above ... i fear you might try to love it to death ... again.. its a tree .. aka conifer ... all it needs until spring is PROPER WATERING ... and i explain that as a damp media.. not dripping soggy wet ....

last thing.. that is not a stake.. that is a shipping aid ... which may or may not be used as a stake ...

i still wouldnt bring it in MY z5 house.. it would be just fine taking it in and out of the garage [in your zone.. it would be dead in mine] ... in my house.. its the forced heat.. that would be a problem.. read that.. lack of humidity ...

so start reducing your love potential.. by putting it in the garage.. and not next to your bed every night.. lol .. and if there is a handy shelf near a window.. i might not even take it out of the garage [though the black pot would be protected from direct sun]... unless the garage heats up a lot on sunny days .. and that might not be good .. we dont want to trigger early spring flush ... we want it to stay in its slow motion winter phase ...

ps: and i would call that a 2.5 [2.25??] inch pot.. w/o a scale ... it HAS TO BE OUT OF IT.. by spring ... at which time you will gently pull it out of the pot.. snap a pic.. and start a new post.. on how to plant it.. or up-pot it ... and then stick it back in the pot.. until we give you advice on root surgery.. if any ...

How'd this tree turn out gregplantaine7? Mine in NJ (zone 6B) grew 2 feet this summer, though its been in the ground for almost 4 years now.
