Looking for cuttings, memories of figs

Ciao everyone. I just completed this trading section of this forum and listed a few cuttings I was trying to aquire. I wondered if anyone could help me. You can send me a reply at my email in my personnal page. I think its a good time now that many trees are dormant. I will maybe be able to trade next year when I alow mine to go dormant, but I could send money for anyones expense. I can't send a whole lot, but something for your time and effort anyway. I am trying to get back to my family tradition of fig growing, and I am just loving every minute of it. It brings back such good memories growing up and watching my grandparents, aunt and uncles taking care of their trees and eating them right of the branch. My grandfather was so meticulous in caring for the figs we had in our farm in italy, He did everything but tuck them in and kiss them goodnight!!!!!! Does anyone else have special fig memories growing up??? The digging of the hole was also a big deal when all the men in the family had the funeral for the fig and buried it till next year, that we did when we came to America with much harder winters. I have been in Pennsylvania since I was 5 , I'm on the wrong side of 30 now. Nonno ( Italian for grandfather ) brought a piece of the tree from the old country and grew it here. When he died, It died too, only a year later, My nonna said they were " joined at the trunk " they couldn't be without each other. I wonder if people who grow other trees get so attached as people do who grow figs. For some reason figs bring back such wonderful times for me. Now I settled down with my fiancee, ( an Italian american ) he is finally getting the bill for my Fig obsession, but he enjoys it as well I think. Well I go for now. Everyone, Ciao Ciao, Maggie

Welcome Maggie,

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about/feeling cuz Ive been through that whole nostalgic roots thing too just a short few yrs ago.

Only one yr ago I had one unknown variety that my father planted in ground when I first bought my home, last fall I traded with a dozen or so ppl from here and now have 18+ varieties growing in pots.

Where abouts are you in Pa? Im in NNJ. I will have plenty of cuttings off my original fig tree when it goes dormant, which I believe to be a Sal's or similiar. I should have a few others from my Hardy Chicago and not sure yet about the others. If you want a few cuttings shoot me an email thru here.......may be a good idea to list which type you're most interested in growing too.

Ciao Frank, I would be interested in a Hardy Chicago or a Sal's. I live In Central Pa, a city called Altoona, not far from Pittsburgh. You have a nice settup there. Let me know how we can get this going? Maggie

Hello, my first time posting. If there is anyone in Canada that has any cold hardy fig tree they are pruning and tossing their cuttings I would love to have them. I have already have Chicago figs trees, if you have anything else, please let me know. I live out in Stoney Creek, Ontario (Z6a). I don't have much to trade other then a few palm tree seedlings I'm trying to grow (sooo slow to grow) but I can send money for postage. thanks!! steve

Thomas, I can send you a few cuttings of a hardy fig. It’s either BT/CH, or Celeste. The figs are very good either way.

Maggie, you're gonna laugh. My memory of figs as a child were the ones my granfather grew. At that time, they were one of the most disgusting things on the face of the earth, and you couldn't get me anywhere near them.

Hi Maggie,
Boy, you've struck a chord with me too. Your story about your Nono and his fig tree being joined at the trunk was beautiful. In my case, it was my Padrino ( I called him Parino) had the fig tree and I used to be awestruck when he would dig a trench and bury it. BTW, I've had only disastrous results trying this, so now they are in containers which come indoors every winter. But, you're so right in tapping into the spiritual aspect of this hobby; I recently did a post in which I referred to my trees as my children; they are very forgiving and patient with me as I make many mistakes while I learn exactly what it is they need. Thanks for your input.

Ciao Pasquale, I know about them like your kids. The fig tree to me and my family in particular don't look at them as simply a source of food, its much more to that. The fig in many ways brings families together, for the cake, for the fresh figs right off the branch, even for the pruning and care and burying. When I see the shape of the leaves especially the 3 lobed ones, it takes me back to a simpler time. In many cases our trees have been in our families for generations, they greet us, and many times we are very sad if something happens to one of them, they do become family, especially in our SENTIMENTAL Italian households. Gosh, grandma's wooden spoon is sentimental to us!!!!! Thanks alot for your imput! Ciao Ciao, Maggie
