How far North will Figs grown UNPROTECTED.

What is the northern limit of growing figs WITHOUT winter protection, such as insulated fig houses or artificial heating? Here in Michigan, this is the only way of keeping fig wood alive over the winter. Without extensive protection, only the roots and possible a bit of trunk wood survives. Althoug this regrows vigorously every year, most varieties won't yield any fruit or if they do, just a few fruits very late.

What are the northern limits of fig cultivation without protection methods. I recall my father's cousin in s. central Illinois having a large fig tree in her yard, much too large to cover, and it overwintered every year, to my knowledge, even though their winters could be just as harsh as ours in s. Michigan.
