I have two fig trees. One I bought as a "brown turkey" however I am almost certain it is actually a Celeste. It's figs are awesome. I love them. They are small to medium and very sweet with a thin skin. My other fig I have no idea what it is. Taken from an offshoot of an old tree in my MOm's yard, which was probably planted in the early 70s. It has larger triangular fruit and open eye. It tastes quite different from my probably Celeste. I do not like the taste of this fig nearly as much as my probably Celeste. I have had some people tell me my mystery fig may be Brown Turkey. It's figs are triangular with a wide base. They are brownish tinged with green when ripe with pinkish flesh. The skin is thick and the flesh is not as sweet as the probably Celeste and there is something else about the flavor that is distinctive but hard to describe, but it is not a taste I like particularly. I think it may be a flavor coming from the thicker skin. So if this is BT, I'm not a big fan of the flavor. I had a brown turkey and didn't like it, gave it away. The other figs in my yard, 6 varieties, I love them all. I bought the tree from a local nursery. At the same nursery, they told me their American Persimmon seedlings were self pollinating (they are not) and that there are no variety names for persimmons or paw paws because they are also seedling grown (not true). They also sold Kiwi, claiming them to be productive, but no male varieties were being sold. So who knows the origin of that Brown Turkey. Most of my other fig trees were grown from cuttings someone sent to me, from their trees that bore figs they liked. I think that's a great way to know that at least someone, somewhere, really liked the fig that you are growing. Even so, the same fig grown in another climate, another soil, another sun exposure, might taste and bear very different. Just my 2 cents on this issue. I would still grow Brown Turkey if it was the only one around. I would also try it again, if the source was reliable and they really liked their fruit, especially if local, so grown in conditions similar to mine.

Well, I finally received a reply from OGW today regarding my email questioning whether this tree was possibly mis-labeled: "We apologize for the delay and want to thank you for the pictures. The pictures of the Fig you sent look exactly like our VernÂs Brown Turkey Figs grown here at our nursery. I went and looked at three different VernÂs out in our orchard this morning. The fruit on ours are still green at this time and probably will not mature this year due to our climate. As you note the fruit on your fig still looks unripe at this time and itÂs best to pull them off, since you received it this spring and itÂs only one year old, to help itÂs roots better establish over winter. You should see some fruit mature and ripen for you next fall so we ask at this time you keep an eye on it and continue to give it the same care. Please keep us posted since we do guarantee our stock to be true to name. If you have any questions please let me know." This from them along with others here have me thinking that it's labeled properly, but it surely doesn't say "Brown Turkey" when I look at it. That may be a good thing!

Gorgi, My original plan was to do as you suggest but I found that when I pasted (ctrl-v) the link to the first photo then went back to photobucket and copied the second photo, then tried to link back to GW/FF to finish the message using either "back" or the direct link (Internet Explorer), the message I had started in GW/FF was now gone. I'm a casual user of XP Home ed. and the internet, and work with a dial-up connection. BTW, I don't know what you mean by "thread". Thanks, Joe
