Where can I find a fig tree in Connecticut, and when to buy

Hi everyone,

My family loves figs and we've been looking all over for a tree. I called my local Lowe's and they said they didn't get a shipment yet. Can anyone help me as to where I could get one locally?

Also, if i did find one, should I by it now, what should I do with it? Thanks so much!

I'm in CT too. Maybe I can help you. You have no email address posted. Do you want to grow your tree in ground or in pots. If you get a small tree now you will probably have to store it in a garage for the winter. It is so cold and wet here. Email me at

disintegrated? like turned to dust? did she water it after planting it. figs are drought resistant but thats once established. while young you should supply water when needed. AZ soil will dry out fast so you can add some organic matter to hold the water better. never dig a hole and poor in potting soil, compost, ect in the hole and plant directly in the hole. amend a hole 2 to 3 times the size of the rootball by mixing existing soil with the soil amendment. the bigger the hole the better. also mulching helps cool the roots in the 100+ degree days and slows evaporation. once your roots are older and run deeper it will probably never need to be watered again or need human assistance and will likely outlive you and provide plenty of figs for your grandkids and maybe there kids. remnants of president Thomas Jefferson's fig orchard lived into the the early 1900's and He planted them as early as 1769. If a tree will take care of you for this long it just makes since to do the extra work upfront. If her plant fails don't give up, just try again. Everyone needs a fig tree especially Mom! Good luck.

Hardy Hibiscus Tree where can I buy

I think there's lots of confusion about that "hardy hibiscus" moniker that going around in the plant trade nowdays. It seems that rose of sharons , which are related to tropical hibiscus and in the same "mallow" family were called Athea for many years, but recently are called Hibiscus , so there's much more confusing the "hardy" Rose of Sharons, with the tropical hibiscuses. with some growers confusing the names even more by calling the rose of sharons , hardy hibiscus now. I guess , unless you can pin the growers down to say, what they're actually selling, that problem will remain. Sometimes the whole question of hardiness is even more confused , when sub-tropical growers talk about "hardy" plants, when they by no means mean "cold hardy". Some plants will tollerate windy conditions , hot locations , and some drought and for the sub-tropics , those are hardy traits that don't fall into the same category as "cold hardiness".

I really love all the plants I've gotten from Gardens of Babylon. They're more expensive, but oh so healthy. I was talking to them about sales the other day, and you can go to their Web site and sign up for their newsletter to get the heads-up. Another little nifty secret I've discovered this year is, some perennials are sold as annuals at nurseries because they are supposedly marginal for this zone. Dusty Miller is always tagged as an annual, but I've read anecdotal reports that it's hardy to Z5. I picked up some small 4" pots of Homestead Purple Verbena for $2 apiece, and that too is perennial here I believe. You should see the growth those little plants have put on just this year. Almost scary. :)

Brandon, the Brown Turkey has a bad reputation among fig connoisseurs as an insipid tasting fig. There are others so much better, it's not the fave of many. Here in Southern California we have the perfect climate (Mediterranean) for figs. Dry Summer Heat and mild winters. So many great varieties grow here, and fig trees are big, we choose only the best. Some are hard to find commercially. Most garden centers will have BT or Hardy Chicago. Sometimes other varieties will pop up. The good ones are treasured by fig lovers and cuttings passed between them.

This isn't a good time of year to get a fig tree, since its most stressful time of the year is approaching.

If you're bound and determined to get one now, you could try one of the locally-owned nurseries. The two closest to me generally have fig trees and I've seen them at pretty much every nursery that I've looked. However, I don't trust the labels on the trees because I see trees with very different leaves labeled as "Brown Turkey Fig". I prefer to support local businesses, but I think I'd buy a fig tree from a source more focused on fruit trees.

I'll take some cuttings off my Hardy Chicago tree before putting it away next month and, if you remind me afterwards, I'll mail some to you. Figs are easy to grow from cuttings. It'll take a couple years to grow to the size of what you can buy, but the price is right. By the way, I grow figs in pots and put them in my detached garage for the winter.
