Best (and worst) brebas

(This was also posted on another forum. I will check posts at both forums, so you don't need to post in both places)

I would appreciate input on this.

This year I will have a good number of fairly young trees that would likely set their first breba crops next year. That is - IF I don't prune most or all of the wood that would produce the brebas.

So...what you guys say about your experience with brebas will have a big impact on my decision about the trees on which I will leave some wood for brebas.

Please share what brebas have been exceptional and which ones have been bad or disappointing.

Bayernfeige,Desert King,Marseilles vs black-Excellent
Violette de Bordeaux,English Brown Turkey,Inferior to main crop.

I agree with Herman along with Los Lunas, and Albuqerque UNK 1.

My EBTs didnt have very tasty brebas this year, but main crop was good.

If your winters aren't too cold then definitely consider Desert King. It sets a lot more brebas than most other varieties. It produces large figs that taste very good. I have one and it starts the fig season early a month before any of the main crop figs ripen. Not sure if anyone is growing these successfully in zone 7 though. Joe

Thanks Melissa, Jle, Susanelewis, Suero and Jacobse, for your suggestions and comments. I bought my 22 yr.old house 4 years ago. No probs whatsoever with the exisiting 22 yr. old toilets. I'm having a tile floor put in the guest bath though, & was advised that now is the time to change the toilet if I think I may want to do so down the road. I hate to replace a trouble free, perfectly fine-looking toilet with something that gives me grief! I have frankly never used a plunger at this house or the at the 100 yr. old one I owned previously for 13 years which had toilets at least as old as my current ones. Have never seen a leaky toilet. Obviously, toilets have always just kind of been there in my life; a real non-issue. Now that I may need to buy one, & have started doing research, my eyes have been opened to the potential pitfalls of toilet ownership. How I yearn for the days when I never knew that a toilet could be such a troublesome loo! Nothing is simple anymore is it? Like so many things...they don't make them like they used to (for better and for worse.)

If you buy a major name brand the cost of ownership of those will be higher (Trane, Lennox, Carrier, American Standard) because part prices can be considerably higher than so called 'landlord' brand. Once you breach the warranty period of the system, generally 10 years the only thing left is 'cost of ownership'. Other factors: time. Time the system is down waiting for parts. You want something that has ease of getting the parts to fix it when it does break. [It will break] If you are buying a system above that of a 'plain ole' entry level system (14 SEER in the South / 13 SEER in the North) You will be limited to that of those brands mentioned above and the 'landlord' brand. However, the landlord brand often times comes with a better manufacturer warranty. The warranty does little good if the unit is not installed AND repaired by a 'skilled' Licensed HVAC contractor, not only knowledgeable in doing AC work, but also those lengthy list of things that 'should not be done'. So what is the best brand for my company? Any brand that has the features you want and that I can get the equipment for within a mile of my house. The 'landlord' brand is within that mix... if you don't use someone knowledgeable, someone who goes around an bashes products because they seem inferior it probably won't be long until they start bashing the brand they sold you... so they can turn around and sell you something different once the warranty period runs out. I've probably been doing this too long. 24 years. 11 years running my own company. They all break. Don't kid yourself. I can and do reduce the risk, but no one can prevent it fully. I service the Katy, Texas area. PS: you do not want to do a 'direct to consumer' type deal where you are buying the equipment. If you buy the equipment, you're responsible for the warranty. That will not be good because AC always break at the worst possible time. Then you're dealing with a 3rd party to ship parts to when they break. That situation will not be pretty. I prefer pretty, with as little of down time as possible. That is the standard to look for. I run service everyday as an example. Yesterday was a holiday. My customers got service. How about you?

How are Mission brebas East of the Mississippi? I had some from California this year that were some of the best figs I've ever eaten.

I really enjoyed the brebas on Naples White, it has a large and an excellent flavor.

I don't have a wide experience with breba, but my
ripened brebas for the first time this year around July 10 -- very tasty; and I've never noticed winter damage on this one, very important for brebas of course.

In my zone,Ficazzana,VdB,Vicenzo,Enrico,Desert King,Latarulla were great.Top of the greats was Ficazzana. Not so good were B.Mission, B.Turkey & Tony's Greek. I am convinved these varieties may do great in warmer zones. Wished my other trees had given me fruits but again I have myself to blame as I winter them in the house & when I took them out in May, the cold took a heavy toll on the trees. I would never winterize my bigger trees in the house but in the cold garage or make a green house.

Thanks Paul for posting. Did you have Ficazzana brebas the year after you got your tree? This April I got two of Ernie's largest, and they look like they might make some figs in the spring. To be clear about your Latarulla...is this the fig with light colored pulp? With E.P.'s recent post about the true Latarulla having red pulp I thought I would ask which one you have.

Has anyone had ripe fruit from Norman's Yellow (a San Pedro)? I had only one fig this year, and it was very good for being the first ripe fig the tree produced. My tree grew a lot this year - setting and dropping a LOT of main crop figs. I should have a decent amount of brebas next year.

Henry - I got the Ficazzana this year. It was a bigger tree. The taste & flavour would beat DK, Latarulla hands down, many other figs too. Very unique flavour & sweet. I only had one fruit, my wife had an eagle eye on this tree, so no chance for me. It has a memorable lingering flavour & sweetness in the mouth including the problem of " U want more". My Latarulla interior is yellow orange. I think I have a picture somewhere & if I find it I will email it. I have not learn how to post pictures yet although Cecil have given me the guidelines. Would attempt it soon. If U want latarulla cuttings - no problems.
Also Henry, how's the paper work required for sending fig trees to USA? Any idea. I have 2 spare Vicenzo trees. One for U & Loslunas if paper work is ABC... A delicious keeper.

hi gang,
my best fig and best breba are the same
which is my family heirloom cilentano fig.
a little difficult to grow but well worth it.
bass , what is the source for white naples?
