Black Ischia Observation.

I have this BI,From UCDavis ,it is 3 yrs. old,and it was very sick with fig mosaic from the start refusing to grow despite all my eforts,Manure ,etc.

This Spring started leafing in may and it was dyeing down instead of growing.

So i thought it is a looser.

The single stem was very sick with every leaf distorted by FM,and yellowingout and dyeing.

I noticed a growing tip at the ground level next to tree.

I took a chance and cut out the main trunk completelly leaving only the little incipient grow bud .

That Bud grew very fast and turned in a much healthier tree as you can see,and all fig mosaic signs went away.

I thought is important to share with you this experience.

The new bud defeat,the deasese,and is growing on as a normal tree now.

It has 5 figs on it and one is getting ripe now.

This is the Variety,that all others are judge against at UCDAVIS,when it come to flavor.

I really wanted to have it and now i do.

In my humble oponion, if anybody can save a sick tree YOU can! You get an attaboy from me, for what that is worth :)

Yes:Very Good question:Antonio. And I am glad to answer on this Forum,so other people see it,and if they want,they will do so. Here they are: Fig I fruited and found excellent tasting but not cold hardy. Needs to be grown in container here in New Jersey,or colder climates: Beall Col de Dame(all) Violette de Bordeaux (EL) Gipsy Fig (Zingarella) Adriatic Barnisotte(From UCDAVIS) Black Ischia Black Mission Sicilian Black (James Robin) These are all super high quality tasting figs,and container growing is needed for two reason: 1.These cultivars are not cold hardy 2.In container they can be placed in the sunniest spot in the yard,and so insure that they will get ripe every year here,because they are larger size fruitting figs that need more heat to get ripe compared with others. Yes, I agree with you on the subject best of best 🙂 I only chose Bass favorite because it was a trade, and ofcourse wanted to know what the noise was about🤔 Most of the time that's the reason. I am sure you remember Tom from New England, after watching his video of BlackMadeira I decided I must have one. Same with the Ben B from Seattle, Ponte Tresa and De La Gloria I could not resist not to try to grow those two, Still haven't ripe Ponte Tresa and I suspect it's not true to type in 🤔 But for sure there are lots of hoped up fig varieties. I do like most of my figs, but I to prefer the berry once, like Chicago Hardy, even ItalianHoney if they are well ripe they are fantastic to me, my husband prefers fig like Atreano, Celeste, Italian Honey, but he likes them before they are well ripe, before these pass the shriveling stage, wen they are still plump. I like them all and I like it that I can taste them at different stages of ripening. Regards Anna

We ate this fig today and results are:
It was 70 gram in weight
It got 10+ on a scale one to ten when judge against all other figs(at least 50,varieties)we (Me and wife)Tasted.
Exceptional Flavor and sugar,from the first fig,it ever had.
Bad Points:It is very challanging to grow this one due to havy FM,infestation.
But if you think you are up to it then if succesfull you will never regret.!!!!!!

My Ischia Black is also very sick (FMV). It is currently in
my GH, a single ~12 inch main "trunk" that branches into two.
I am tempted to do what Herman did. But, as a safety measure,
I will girdle and air-layer the whole thing. Then hope
for the best, for a new clean shoot coming from below...?

Good luck to you Gorgi, i hope it works somehow for you. I do recall from readings about invitro trials that its been said that FMV spread slowly thruout a plant. Just maybe you can get a part fast enough where its not been spread into yet. In the lab they cut a bud that just appears and dissect the inside of it under a microscope and extract the middle part called the meristem which is very very tiny to the eye and contains everything to sprout a plant under strict sterile circumstances, they also further state that its free of the FMV because when extraced as like i said it has yet to be infected.I believe that Herman's success is quite possible with a little luck that his part might not have had the FMV infect it yet and you with same luck can also achieve it its worth a try! Looking at his is probably the best specimen around that i have seen so far of black Ischia type. Also i believe Hermans plant will thrive well even if it gets reinfected as an adult by another plant as it might have the ability to fight it off better by being older and stronger but thats just my thinking on the subject.

Hmmm, the IT GW/FF "search" feature finally worked!...

As an update to my 2nd-up-post, I did as I said.
Here are the results.

Air-layering was (successfully) done 2 nodes above soil.

Lower node "greened" but still stunned. I will it rub it out.

Upper node "shot" up! About 7 inches right now, with ~1"
(normal) betweeen nodes. I still see FMV signs, but this
a significant improvemnet in growth.
(rather than > 1/8 - 1/4" between nodes)

My next look-up-to, is a ripened good fruit...

UpDate,to my original post:
My Black Ischia was inground over winter in the same spot as in the picture above,next to the house(south side).
Last year had figs but none got ripe .
This Spring it died to soil level again,+,a little wood spur,is alive from the Original wood.
It has about 5 buds and it started growing again.
I have hope ,it will produce a handfull of ripe fruits this year.
And by the way,This Spring when I noticed is dead to ground,I moved it back in a 4 gallon pot,where it will stay.
It failed against our cold climate ,inground.
It really doesn't Matter,because this exquisite fig,is worth the efort of sheltering it over winter,because of the exceptional taste and flavor,wich I had the chance to Know about 3 years ago.
By the way:I concluded,from Experience,that all new seadlings,of less value,are the easyest to root,and care for,while the best tasting cultivars,are a challange to root and grow.That is why I do not give up on this cultivar!

Fully agree that it is challenge to get this variant to grow the next leaf. I am so tempted to get my 2 BI into the garbage heap until this fresh posting that I need more patience. Thanks guys.

Considering you have 2 BI, I recommend that you pick
one and beat the heck out of it!

Better off than the compost heap! It may say thank you...

Air-layering was my sure way of keeping the specimen alive.
From Herman and my experince, I would just chop one off
them down to ground, less 1 (or 2 nodes).

It seems that this good beast fig likes a 'beating',
natural or otherwise to snap-out-of-it ?!...

Good advise George. Have to do it in secret though. Prying neighbourly eyes can get me a free assessment by a lunatic Dr. Anyway, jesting aside -- feedbacks rated so highly by Herman must be given 2nd chance. If these 2 kaput, I guess I have to seek US help to air layer one for brother up north.
