Brimfield Antiques Show, garden items.

So.....................

The wife and I drove up to Brimfield Mass on Sunday. It was the last day of the September Antiques show there. We went intending to purchase garden supplies such as, old tools, a garden gate, buckets, and pots. What we left with was a car load of house hold items intended to never see the light if day. After a few protests and reminding her what our original mission was, she broke down and bought me some bulbs. For herself, three large pieces of Victorian furniture costing an unmentionable amount.

My prize, a 15 pack of TULIPS - DARWIN HYBRID whose intense orange should prove to be awesome if the packaging is at all realistic. A 20 pack of ALLIUM SPHAEROCEPHALON and a box of 5 ALLIUM - PURPLE SENSATION. The lesson learned I guess is, its not how much she spent, but the thought that counts LOL! As I said, the total of what she spent on herself is unmentionable, spent on me, including parking, $22.00 Hahahahaha!!!

You did well. The colours on the packages are usually a bit off. But that won't matter when you see orange tulips blooming. They will stand out anyway. Alliums will also stand out in a garden because of their shape and texture. You scored well! Now I wonder if they will bloom at the same time in your garden. hmmmm.

I bought a bag of 4 fritillaria, 2 yellow and 2 orange. Eeewww they are stinky things. lol. I had to plant them right away couldn't stand the smell of them. hahahaha This is what you plant when you have stinky neighbours. LOL!!!!

Great score! Receiving surprise garden gifts is so much fun!

Sierra...I've often wondered who grows fritillaria. Not something that's seen around here. I guess they make for great deer and bunny repellant? LOL

Like your stuff!! Of course daybed ends were really priced right!!! Will make nice benches!! The rusty blade is really cool!! I can see the face with the beard peeking out of your wood!! Is the ladybug made with "parts" from something else? Very unique,her head could be a bell (old style) back looks bit like a bell(kind that teacher had on desk with large metal part that moved) I can't get the show yet as when I tried to get Adobe flash it doesn't take. Think I have to disable something or other???? DD will have to do it for me!! You sure had a good trip with fun stuff to bring home. Guess I'll have to make it out to Antiques Fair in Saugus & see if there are any great deals, I got couple of things yr. ago when out there as people were quitting for some reason(just a couple)got seaglass for $6. for green & blue mix. I think it might have been tumbled and not really picked up on shore. Son's wife didn't care tho, she took half home to go with what she had actually found at the ocean by Morro Bay. There is 1 place that actually has shells & beach glass but they may "plant" it!!LOL Jan

As stage set design, the Undersea Garden is a highly creative effort that deserved to win. As a practical garden that could actually grow in the SF Bay Area, it would have to be edited to take out the plants that don't like our winters, and the client would need to be made aware that plants were chosen for effect, rather than ultimate size and adaptability. Susi added a link to an actual outdoor garden down in Encinitas that is a living garden, and reflects the real world concerns of pulling off these same effects in a garden built to last for more than 5 days. Thanks, Susi for posting this, I haven't had the chance to see this yet, but already know Bill Teague's own garden and the reputation of Solano Succulents. I also wonder that anyone would think that those chairs are actually usable! Another piece of stage design that isn't actually practical or even usable... From the comments on this thread, it sounds like the show this year managed to cover most of the bases, and had something for everybody to enjoy. As one of the garden designers myself, I wish I had had more of an opportunity to actually talk design with the public, as often happens with gardens on display for garden tours. The nature of the event doesn't really encourage discussion, but does provide an opportunity for people to get together in celebration of plants, gardens and design. I don't know if the average visitor realizes that none of the display garden designs would actually be practical in the real world, but instead are designed for a temporary display and to create the illusion of a mature garden. And like Cinderella at midnight, they will all start to be dismantled at the close of the show this evening, with only the recorded image left as testimony of their brief existence, until new gardens unfold next spring.

Max, I imagine you have a tax id#,right? Are you in Maryland? You should check to see where your "Gift Mart" is. I think the closest to you will be in Pennsylvania. There are vendors that you can buy your items from wholesale, there are many garden type furniture companies to choose from. I'm in Minnesota, and there is a mart here, but there are different vendors at each show, I do not carry this type of item, but that may help you. Good luck.

Oh please do post PJ. Be bold with color! It's fun, and I've been hoping my adventures into color in the garden with paint would inspire others. And remember about all the 'stuff' I have -- I've been collecting bird cages for over 30 years. The one with the turquoise roof is one of my first. I bought it for the fantail pigeons, but they multiplied so fast we had to buy more cages. I had the idea that I would keep a few birds in each big cage, but when we let them fly loose every day -- birds of a feather that they are -- they wanted to roost together so we ended up building what is now the 'art museum'. Also we used to drive to Nuevo Laredo, which is across the border from Laredo, and buy lots of wrought iron stuff, including bird cages, tables, and plant stands, etc. very inexpensively. Incidentally, I had two of the bird cages you see at the end of the trail between bougies and used them as decor at my daughter's wedding -- complete with white doves, which I used to have as well as the pigeons. One pair cooed all though the ceremony and the other pair fought; just like married life ... LOL. Anyway, now they advise people not to go over the border. But sometimes you can find bird cages at yard sales and flea markets. Looking forward to your pictures, and anyone and everyone elses too!

I hope these bulbs grow so I can photograph them in the spring. I wonder if the flowers are that stinky?

Yes, the fritillaria have an unpleasant aroma; but you got to get your nose right up to them to find out. At least, that's my experience.

If the bulbs turn out well, she'll wish she'd bought ten times the number, or hundreds.

Tulips are wonderful for picking for bouquets. Some of Gottagarden's pics have alliums in great numbers, beautiful.

Frittilaria - lol. Our local master gardener, who was in charge of the Governor-General of Canada's greenhouses, and all of the flowers for the residence, told his most embarrassing story. Now, I am going by memory, but, based on the pictures, he ordered a greenhouse's worth of said bulb, to greet the Queen (yes, that one) on her late winter visit. Now, I know he 'cottoned-on' to the scent in time - no word on how they filled the greenhouses, in the meantime!!!

Nancy, I have heard that story before. lol I forgot about that. Maybe I should get enough for my entire yard. hahahaha Seriously I am considering buying a few more to place near my roses and spireas to keep the mice away this winter. I wonder if they would really work for that. Anyone know for sure if they will work and how many would I need....would one between each 2 roses work?

Costco has a $3 off coupon soon, so I am thinking of buying a couple more bags if they have them. I'll just hold my nose till they are planted. :)))

Gotta Garden's photos always make me drool. Those iris are just beautiful. I have purple sensation alliums as well. They will self-seed if you let them and the bulbs also multiply. I think I originally planted 4 in my hosta bed years ago. When I redid that bed this year.....there were many many bulbs....almost enough to cover the back of that bed.

I found white allium bulbs at Canadian Tire yesterday. I almost bought them, but decided that they were a bit expensive. Uhhhh duh, why didn't I just get them. Now I will have to go back to get them. LOL!

Oh and a tulip tip for today. :)

Tulips are usually short lived. But if you lift them after the foliage dies back every year or every second year and divide them.....planting back only the largest bulbs...you will have flowers for years to come. The smaller bulbs I usually toss into the compost.....but if I have a strain that I want to keep going, I put the smaller bulbs in a holding bed until they are big enough to start flowering. Tulips multiply so quickly they crowd themselves out.
