foundation shrub recommendation

I need help finding an evergreen foundation shrub for the front of my house. The house is a bungalow style with a large awning. When we moved in there was a mature boulevard cypress that looked great from the front but was dead in the back. I know I need something smaller that would be planted out further so the back won't be shaded. I am an avid flower gardener so I'd like something that would be round or pyramidal (sorry! I like them!) so I can plant flowers in front and below them. The garden faces east so gets mainly morning sun. I am zone 7-6 MD/PA. The conifers would need to be maximum 3 feet wide by four feet high because the area is narrow (due to awning). However the garden runs the front of the house so I could plant 3 or 4. Hope someone can help as I've tried everything--rhododendrons (one is living but too sparse). Pieris Japonica (sp?) died. Help!
