Nell's Nemesis, Nematodes!

I just got back from a 2 day Master Gardener specialist training class. One of the very interesting things I learned about was controlling nematodes.

The best method is to solarize your soil. The hot, hot months are the best time to do this, so July, August and September would do it for us. Till the soil, and level it, making sure there are no weeds or clods of dirt to raise the plastic from the ground. Water well, and cover with clear plastic completely. Moisture not only makes organisms more sensitive to heat, but it also conducts heat faster and deeper into the soil. Secure the edges of the plastic with rocks, bricks or anything similar to hold it down, and pull soil to cover the edges all around the plastic, so that heat and moisture cannot escape from the plastic, and cool air and moisture cannot get under the plastic. Leave this plastic on for at least 4 weeks, 6 would be better. This needs to be clear plastic, not black plastic nor a colored opaque tarp.

This heats the soil to terrific temperatures, and 'cooks' those nematodes. The TAMU Experts who were teaching this seminar say that this is a very good method of control.

Another method is to dry till the soil. Till the soil until it is totally dried out. Not real hard to do here, with our drought, but it would be harder for you who have been getting some rain. I will check to see how deep you have to dry till the soil. I am thinking there was a specific depth. This is also beneficial, as the nematodes require moisture to live. If you dry out the soil, they die.

Hope this helps.
