Frigid -46.1 C at the Edmonton International Airport ?

Does anyone know someone living near to the airport that can confirm the nasty cold temperatures recorded there? Here in the hills near Spruce Grove, on Sunday morning the mercury had dipped to -33 C (-27 F) ... that's no where near the absurdly cold recorded at the airport. The temperature received here is usually within one or two degrees of what is shown on the Global Morning News. Is the airport situated in some hell frozen over frigid zone, OR are their recording devices possibly defective? ... is it really that cold there?

The current cold snap is just about over ... heck, really didn't seem that bad to me.

According to the weather it hit -47 and was touted as the coldest place on earth. Check out the site below

Well, my compost pile has a frozen crust on it and I'm now adding materials to the old black box rather than trying to get into the pile. When the black box is full I think I'll try using birdseed bags. I have a lot of empty birdseed bags (and a lot of full birds). While the cold is annoying, I had an epiphany of sorts this morning as I walked to the pile. Frozen dog poop and frozen turkey poop don't stick to your shoes! A small pleasure, but it matters when you're about to re-enter the house and didn't check your shoes. Claire (grasping at straws at the onset of winter)

I'll update my experience with the seedlings grown from the horse chestnut tree in downtown Edmonton. First the results were somewhat favorable, though that's now turned into failure. They had been grown on for several years and set out as 3 ft specimens, most had not made their first winter and died right back to the ground. About one in five survived with only the top buds dying and the plant then being able to recover and do pretty good in that season, though these have also all now perished. I did have one that was seemingly superior in hardiness and having much more attractive foliage than the parent tree. It was about 4 ft tall and went through two winters without any tipkill whatsoever, though last winter it was struck right back down to the ground, maybe the nasty October had done it in? I'll give it time to see if it recovers. Even the established horse chestnut at Wellington Garden Center (north Edmonton) had a fair amount of dieback after last winter. Terry

Thanks... I'll keep my optimism and hope for the best for my Arbutus marina. I've picked a spot in full sun (of course) with good drainage, etc etc. I've given up on the native Arbutus (at least temporarily). I've tried several times and have had limited success, though I've never had one die due to harsh winters. They always seem to die in late spring / summer / fall, for no apparent reason (which the native Arbutus is known for). The last one I had lasted for 4 years. It was a nice looking, healthy little tree and then, poof, it just decided to die in mid-July. I hope you have more success than I with that that one. I am (probably temporarily) content with looking at the huge healthy native Arbutus across the street in my neighbour's yard.

Hit -55 here this winter in zone 5a! Ugh. Still, all of my European plums survived well. That's bavay greengage, mirabelle, italian, long john, kirke's blue, coe's golden drop, and schoolhouse. Toka also survived, along with Superior. No dieback on any cherries - managed to keep Rainier, Lapins, 2 U of Saskatchewans (Romeo and Juliet), Kristin and Craig's Crimson. Lost black ice. Lost Arctic Glo nectarine, Mericrest survived though it sustained injury. Lost all my japanese maples. Lost a normal ornamental cherry and experienced massive tip dieback on a huge viburnum hedge.

I drive out to Devon every morning and the dash thermometer drops a good 7 degrees from the north end where I start until I get to Devon, it must be a micro climate out there.

Yes, obviously some deep freeze pocket in that area. I'm thankful I don't reside where temps drastically dip below what is experienced nearby.

Konrad, the next time I'm at the airport, I'm gonna have to take a thermometer with me, lol.

I realize I'm late here, but yes, the International airport is always one of the coldest places on clear calm nights. In my Millwoods backyard on that particular night I recorded -38.8 C.

Hi all
Haven't been on here for AGES. Happy New Year to all.
On that particular night, my son was in a car accident on Ellerslie Rd and 111 St. (He's thankfully OK, but my car didn't survive : ( Airbags did their job) When we drove to get him, the fog was also a major concern. We couldn't see headlights more than about 15 feet away. The temp on my husband's truck was reading -39 and that was at about 1:30 AM. Believe me, it was brutally cold and we were at the scene for about 2 hours waiting for the towtrucks to arrive.

BTW, don555, I'm not far away. I'm in Summerside. We're neighbours :)

When I took my MG course out at the Devonian, we talked quite extensively about the microclimate that they have and we talked about how it extended to the airport, Rabbit Hill area, etc.
