Black Marseilles?

Got this fig from a local Greek fellow last year. The leaves, immature fruit, form, buds, pulp, taste are indistinguishable from blanche/marseilles/lattarula which is common in these parts. However, the skin is a dark purple colour - has anyone

heard of such a fig before?

Taste is very similar to the normal Marseilles/Blanche/Lattarula - sweet but not rich,
good though not at the top of my list.

Hi:and Congratulation. Do not prune them this year. Except Pinch the top of the 5 foot tall tree. You do not want them any taller than 5 foot this year because you want them to branch out. And yes,get som dolomitic powdered or(granular) limestone,and spread it around in ground trees,and if you can work it inside surface soil so the wind do not blow it away. Do not worry you can't over apply it up to 2 inches,deep is OK. You can plant all your trees outside this year. I can see you will have ripe fruits this year,and good for you. H2

This reinforces my theory that there are 2 different figs named Desert King in the US. My DK is planted in ground and has similar fruits as shown in an Herman's previous post http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fig/msg072043541873.html While the recent post describing the Gillette rescue, (along with Desert King), is showing a fruit that looks different from the inside in color (darker). And this is not the first time that I see Desert King pictures showing such differently colored fruits.. The link to the Gillette post: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fig/msg1214390014100.html?13 Size and weight seems different as well.. the DK I have has some fruits reaching 60 grams, but usually they are around 40-45 grams or less, and Condit was talking about an average of more than 80 grams... Finally, even if I have only been able to observe DK with fruits for the last 3 years, and although I live in a very humid region, the DK has resisted pretty well so far and needs quite a lot of rain before starting to sour, like any normal fig would... Last winter being mild here in Albuquerque our fig really did well outdoors this summer & is over a 6 ft. tall bush & was loaded with figs this year. Unfortunately I don't really care for the sweet taste of them though I love the pretty leaf shapes! Don't have any idea what variety it is as it was from a cutting from our family in Roswell that have had one growing there (& many more cuttings from it)for generations. All seem to survive our winters here growing in the ground. Is yours planted in the ground also leon edmond? We are right at 5200 ft. where we live in the NE part of the City & have 40 yr. old fruit bearing pomegranates here also next to the fig & both get 'nipped' occasionally but come right back. The photos of those large figs are great ... They are huge compared to most of ours!

In leafing through Condit's 1955 monograph recently, I came upon a description that nicely fits my "black Marseilles",
namely that of Barbillone:

"Barbillone. Described by Eisen (1901), Schneider (1902),Juignet (1909), Nomblot
(1913), Mazires, (1920), A. Rivire (1928), Socit Nationale d'Horticulture de Fr
ance (1928), Delplace (1933), Delbard (1947), and Evreinoff (1947). Illustrated
in color by Delbard. Origin uncertain, but reported to be a bud sport of Blanc
he, and named for the grower at Argenteuil who found it.
Tree productive of brebas; second crop small.
Brebas medium to large, variable in shape, but commonly pyriform; ribs d
istinct; stalk short; eye large, with protruding scales; skin thin, easily peele
d, greenish violet in color; pulp amber, tinged with red. Quality very good, su
perior to that of Blanche for fresh fruit.
Second-crop figs medium; neck lacking; eye small, open, with dark-colore
d scales; skin thin, violet-black; pulp amber, coarse, juicy."

The description fits my observations very well, especially since the said fig was indistinguishable to me from lattarula/blanche prior to setting fruit. This description
(and Eisen's) indicate that the breba are excellent; I was in my garage the other day and noted that there are alot of fruit buds for this summer's breba crop.

Anyone have this fig? or know of someone who could corroborate verify from my picture?
