Question on Ripening of Fruit I purchased from Paradise

Hi, First I got to say that I read this forum often and have learned a ton.

My question of the fall. About three years ago I purchased a tree from Paradise. It was called Strawberry something or another. It is a thick green skined fruit with a bright red interior.

I live in NJ and have not had a lot of success with the fruit. Last year two ripened and they were excellent...but this year my 20 or so figs are still hard as a rock.

Anyone else in NY or NJ have this tree and have had success with it ripening. I am trying to figure out if I should pass it along to my family a little further South or give it another season. It is a great looking tree and the fruit look nice but I need my fruit.

Dan:Figs are late to ripe in NJ This Year.After a short Ripening Flash,the cold weather settled in and the figs stop maturing.
I noticed it with all my Adult figs.
If warmer days ahead we will have a lot more ripe figs starting next week.
Also Your fig Bataglia verde,is young and when young figs mature later than normal.
It will mature earlier every year for next 4 years and then you will know if it is a late maturing fig for our area.

Dan, keep the Battaglia and give it a chance. This is one heck of a fig. I bought mine from Paradise two seasons ago and it does skimp on the figs in it's younger years but time will make up for that. The quality and taste of the fig is worth the wait. Herman is right about the timing of maturity. Here's what you have to look forward to:

If you protect the tree from freeing temps it should survive outside no problem. This year my Meyer did something similar where I had two primary blooms one in early spring, those are starting to yellow now and a second bloom in mid summer which are about the size of yours. I would assume they will just be ready a little later probably late winter or early spring. Or they might just end up being smaller.

Could you post a picture of the tree? These are extremely fast growing trees and I would expect it to be much larger at 3 yrs old. Mine are always full of flowers and fruit and buzzing with bees except in the cooler winter. Where are you located? I don't fertilize now as I don't want to encourage new growth as we move into cooler weather.

I've done some research on this (I research everything I can about growing tomatoes - I'm AR) and a better measure than from bloom to ripe fruit is fruit set (when a blossom actually turns into a fruit). As has been posted, a lot of factors come into play - type of plant, size of fruit, rain, soil, lighting, etc., but one interesting aspect is Growing Degree Days (GDD). This is a figure that takes the daily high (usually up to about 90-95 degrees), subtracting the low temperature, dividing by two (to give the average daily temp) then subtracting 50. So if the high is 95, the low is 65, the average temp for the day is 80. Subtract 50 from that gives you 30 GDD. That would mean that the average tomato with average rainfall and average soil will ripen in six weeks. Growing indoors, where the lower temps can be better controlled, can lower that figure. Stick with this fig like the others have recommended. I have this one too, and it's one of my favorite, if not my very favorite of the couple dozen varieties I have that are old enough to produce fruit. Also, this variety is later to ripen than most of my other figs. Here in the deep south my Battaglia Green/Strawberry Verte finished ripening figs about 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for the advice. I will be patient. I have limited space here in central Jersey so I want to make best use of my space.

I have this tree in a container and it grows a little each year. It grows no where near the amount of the giant Fig Weed tree I have in ground. How many years, what type of size can I expect from a mature potted tree?
