Bedazzling blooms before boom boom time

For the past two days, we've had rain/storms in the middle of the day. This afternoon tornados rolled through Nashville, and we spent part of the afternoon in the basement. Now I've got a gigantic limb down in the front year, even bigger than the gigantic limb down in the backyard from last week. But the blooms first thing in the morning were gorgeous both days. Even if the evening blooms were pretty much obliterated.

Here are some first-time bloomers in my collection:

INIMITABLE - ffo on a new one. This one should be a whopper when it grows up.

CONQUEST QUAY - I got this one two years ago, and it is just now blooming.

TUX AND TAILS - I got this one last year and it's finally blooming. I love the bicolor effect of the first bloom. I think it's really supposed to be a bitone, so the sepals may not always be this light.

BETTIE LOUISE PRINCE - New this year from Jack Carpenter. The first bloom was nearly 8-inches!

I am glad life if not limb are ok out there with all those tornadoes!! We get green sky every now and then and it always freaks me out. Only had the sirens go off once so far in three years, and only one friend had the side of her house sucked up... so not so bad I guess!!

I am so happy you posted Susie Tee! I just got a four fan division from Abundant Daylilies, so I am hoping to see blooms next year - I just love your photo.

I think corals must be growing on me because ONCE UPON A DREAM is fabulous. What form and substance!

Hey Debra, glad you are OK. I heard it was moving that way when we left the basement of the hotel (we decided to evacuate). Love the photos! I love the soft color on Inimitable.

There are very few times I go into town I am not stopped at a traffic light next to or behind a car with their sound systems blasting so loud you can almost see the sympathetic vibrations of the car's frame. It's especially funny when their windows are closed and alls you can hear are the bass rumbles. It used to bother me until I had this flashback of when I was an early twenty-something, running late in the mornings as usual and pressing the metal to get through that little Ozark town to work. Of course I had my shoes kicked off, and the radio blasting as loud as it would crank in my little gold Mustang. Finally I heard this tremendous shriek behind me and it dawned on me I'd better look in the rear-view mirror. It was a police siren and lights were flashing. Into the open window the face of a very weary older member of our local police force popped and I switched off the ignition. He says "didn't you hear the sirens?" When I said no he told me he had followed me for five blocks trying to get my attention. LOL. Yes, I was speeding (just a little). He recognised me and knew I was a single mom, and heading for work. He cut me the biggest break I didn't deserve and sent me on my way with a warning to lighten up my foot and turn my radio down. There was no way on earth I could've paid that ticket without hocking belongings or floating a loan. I can actually grin now when the occasional deafening car rolls by because I have been there myself.

So a quick update. none of the seeds are viable. only maybe 30% of the total plant went to seed. Ive removed most of the seeding culms and left a few so I could track progress. Never saw a single flower extended from the seed sheath. Very interesting.... Im wondering if it has something to do with installing a shallow well and the change in chemistry of the water that happened last year right before it went to seed. The new water is potentially high in nitrates and nitrites but ive not had it tested.

This cultivar is by Dora Swanson, who is from somewhere in the South, Texas I think but am not totally sure. Here is the registration information from the AHS Database. Someone sent me one of her plants as a bonus a couple of years ago and it does fine here. Don't know much about her, sorry! Boom De Base (Swanson-D., 2001) height 26", bloom 6.5", season M, Rebloom, Evergreen, Diploid, Very Fragrant, Peach orange polychrome with darker peach orange eye above green throat. I'm watching TWC and it is almost painful to watch when you think about the people and animals in the path of these horrific storms. This storm that has run from Edmond to Arcadia to Luther to Fallis just won't stop---it is producing either one long-track tornado or many sort-track ones.I am watching the TV and Chris is watching it on his laptop on TVN where two chasers are live streaming from opposite sides of the storm. Now, peas.... When I soak, I just soak a couple of hours or maybe overnight if I am absent-minded and leave them in the water too long. Then, I roll them around in innoculant, wrap them in paper towels (some years) and wait for them to sprout OR I take them from the innoculant and plant them in 3 oz. bathroom sized cups filled with soil-less mix. I keep the cups inside in average room temperatures and the peas sprout in just a few days. I plant the cups in the ground as soon as a leaf or two appears. If I am going from sprouted peas to the ground, as soon as the little sprout appears coming out of the pea, I put them in the ground. If the ground is wet, I dust them with sulphur as I put them in the ground, although I have wondered if that counteracts the innoculant. So, if you held them inside for days, particularly in the friedge, I suspect that the problem. If you left them in the water to sprout, they likely absorbed too much water and rotted. It only takes 2 or 3 hours for them to absorb enough water to induce sprouting. Putting them in the fridge might not have hurt them had they not been in the water for a while. The reason we sprout indoors is that when the ground is cold and wet in mid-winter and early spring, they rot. If your climate is similar enough to Farmerdill's that you think a December planting would work for you, then why not try it? Is he the same zone as you? Since he is in Georgia,I guess I always have assumed he is zone 8. I have planted flowering sweet peas in late fall or early winter for spring bloom here in zone 7b.. I think that it would be harder here with sugar snaps because we tend to drop into the single digits every winter (sometimes as low as 0 or 1, but this winter I think only to 8 or 9 degrees), and temperatures that low might kill the plants. I might try it anyway just to see what happens. Very small plants will tolerate more cold than taller ones. Even when peas freeze back to the ground, they often resprout, but if they freeze repeatedly it can sap their strength. You have nothing to lose by trying it. If they freeze back, you can just plant a spring crop as always. We go from too cold to too hot here for peas in the blink of an eye. I just pulled my sugar snap pea plants but we had harvested for 3 or 4 weeks and, while I didn't weigh and keep track of the harvest, I know I harvested at least 15-17 gallons of sugar snaps. I'm still working on processing the excess since the last picking a couple of days ago was a smidgen under 10 gallons. I actually have about 15 plants I left in the ground because they had a lot of half-mature ones and I wanted to let them grow a couple more days. At this point, I am pretty sick of sugar snap peas and have begun the harvest of cauliflower.

Everything I have read about INIMITABLE says 1 remarkable flower.

I really like TUX AND TAILS as a bicolor, I wouldn't be disappointed if its stays just like it is!

BETTIE LOUISE PRINCE rocks my world!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Color, throat, ruffles & it looks like it is carved too! Correct me if I'm wrong.

Connie - Is your home OK after the storm? Are you seeing much damage in the Brentwood area? I was checking the backyard a while ago and couldn't believe my luck. The same walnut tree that lost a limb partly in my backyard last week, lost another huge limb today. But it sailed right over the corner of my backyard, over the fence and into the yard of the neighbor in back of me. If not for the extremely strong winds, it would have dropped right on a bunch of my daylilies, shrubs and fence.

Lala - BETTIE LOUISE has really heavy substance. The deep veining does look kind of carved. I would prefer TUX and TAILS keep that bicolor look. But when it's planted in the ground it will probably have very light lavender sepals.

Debra, Sorry to hear about your stormy weather. But your daylilies seem to be doing extremely well...wonderful pics. Just look at that shot of BALI WATERCOLOR - fantastic!

That sounds scary - hope the tree limbs didn't hurt anything. I really like Tux and Tails as a bicolor and the ruffling on Once Upon a Dream is gorgeous!

I hope with another tree limb down that there at least is more sun for the daylilies. Great daylilies. I just love RAZOR EYES.

As usual, your photos are fabulous! I couldn't pick just one, but Betty Louise Prince and Susie Tee are TDF! Love them both. My wishlist is getting larger than the list of dl's I grow. lol
Glad that you guys are ok. The storm hit here around 6pm. There were tornadoes in the area and we had some hail and flooding. No damage that I could see. It is thundering again now.

So glad you are OK after the storm. We've had 8 days straight of afternoon t-storms, funnel clouds, tornados and such. No damage here but I'm ready for better weather!

Berrytea - You said it. I'm ready for better weather too. Thursday and Friday are supposed to be rain free, but the temps will be up in the 90s. With the rain and heat, I'm not going to get many seed pods this season.

There has been soo much bad weather around this year,Glad you made it ok,and the limbs didn't take out everytning.I love all of these but, my favorites are TUX AND TAILS and MOONLIGHT SAIL, and SUSIE TEE. They stand out for me.Thanks for sharing them.

Beautiful! I don't normally like spiders and UFOs, but I'm loving BALI WATERCOLOR. That may need to go on my list!

Noeyw - If you are going going to grow a few spiders, BALI WATERCOLOR is a must. It has beautiful color, strong scapes and multiplies very well. It's a favorite among the tet spiders I grow.

We had some high winds here also last week, it was scary. Glad you didn't get major damage and your babies survived ok.
