I got my first catalouge today from Stokes. I'm sure others will not be too far behind.

Now there is something to look forward to again. I was starting to go through withdrawal.

    Two Different Seed Catalogues

Well hi. I was reading your post and was ready to suggest a company to you.......what do you know.....it's Heritage Harvest Seed from Manitoba. It just so happens I phoned them yesterday for a catalogue. Where did I hear of them? I happened to be in a Chapters Book Store and Hugo Bonjean, an author was just inside the store selling his two books. He used to be an executive and now lives somewhere near Calgary and grows pretty much most of his own food. It was such a delight to talk to him that I bought both of his books, even though I wasn't absolutely positive what they were about. During our conversation he mentioned Heritage Harvest Seeds, and that's how I came to know about them. He highly recommended them.

I'm sure all the online sources are giving some seed companies a run for their money. I like the print catalogues, too. I've just got the Stokes catalogue so far - besides Wm Dam, I'm not sure which other ones I'll get because I've only been ordering from Stokes & Wm Dam. I've got a shopping cart already started at Stokes - I thought I might try the Toscana Strawberries, Santa Cruz Begonia and the new hanging pansies, and they all need to be started early.

    Seed catalogue time?

My favorite is Maine-based Johnny's Select Seeds because they have many varieties that are geared to produce well in shorter seasons or adverse conditions. If you like heirloom veggies, they have them as well as non-heirloom, and they have an incredible variety of unusual veggies along with herbs and flowers. For instance they probably have 8 or 10 kinds of basil, pumpkins in 4 colors and many sizes for decoration, edible seeds and cooking, and an enormous variety of peppers and tomatoes. The catalog has a wealth of info - most types have seed temperature germination graphs so you know what temps you need for best germination. I also like Renee's Garden Seeds, a smaller seed company that's VT based. http://www.reneesgarden.com/seeds/seeds-hm/seeds.html They have less common varieties, with an emphasis on great flavor. Herbs and flowers are here as well. Both of them are New England based, independent seed companies, so their products should do well in our area, and they are helping to keep a wider range of varieties around. Another place that you might want to consider is the Seed Savers Exchange. http://www.seedsavers.org/ They have open pollinated varieties, many old. If you are a member you get a discount and the option of ordering from other members, but you can also order from their catalog if you are not a member. Great place to get excellent flavor in your veggies, and they also include flowers and herbs. Here is a link that might be useful: Johnny's Select Seeds

Catalogue and Seed Packet Germination Terms Indicative of Winter Sowi

Pretty Portulaca often reseeds Take a look at a seed catalogue, most will have some sort of notation about a seed's germination requirements, or you'll pick up a few clue-in phrases. Look for these terms: Reseeds Wildflower Will Colonize Self Sows Hardy Seeds Can be direct sown early Seedlings can withstand frost Sow outdoors in early Autumn Sow Outdoors in late Autumn or early Winter Sow outdoors in early Spring while nights are still cool Sow outdoors in early Spring while frosts may still occur Weed (such as butterfly weed, joe pye weed, jewel weed) Needs Pre-chilling (freeze seeds, refrigerate seeds, stratify for x amount of day or weeks) Needs Stratification

    Anything new and exciting?

I didn't find anything new that caught my eye, but they have some of the things that I would like again.
I'm not the best seed saver, although I have good intentions.
I should order another T&M catalouge. I really like their stuff, but never seem to order.

Marcia, I do not do xmas cards, if they are important enough I phone them instead. Am I bad?

Yes Sierra, I'm just starting to go through withdrawl. My whole year was crappy with gardening and health. I really had no desire to start thinking about growing new stuff. I was struggling to get everything outside done before the snow.
But now I have buds on my Amaryllis. I can't wait.

T&T came today. I didn't find anything new and exciting, but new catalogues always remind me that i want this, and this, and some of that, and maybe i should grow this....

Our new principal asked me today if a person could grow wave petunias from seed. I said you sure could and she turned around and looked speculatively at her deep-silled south-facing window. :>

Shelley, yes, you're awful! :) I really need to do cards this year because of Darius - well, i do a letter, one of THOSE! We never have much to brag about, though, so it's just a newsy, what's-been-going-on-all-year letter. This year Darius will be the star!

Shelley I felt the same about gardening and health this summer - the garden just didn't really come together and I was not enthused. There's just too much grunt work needs to be done and I didn't expect not to be able to do it.

I got my Stokes catalogue and there are a few Dianthus I'm interested in (Valentine looks nice!), plus I see they have my Phlox now. For some reason I missed my veggie garden most of all this past summer, I'm really excited about getting that going again this year.

Dianthus are on my list this year again. If you like Valentine Gil, you might also like Ideal-White Fire. It was a very good bloomer.

I've also had the Corona Cherry Magic which has a bit larger flowers.

    Which phlox is your favorite?

That dianthus is gorgeous, Shelley! I have some blooming in the house right now - couldn't bear to let it go!

Oh, that is pretty Shelley, and it looks like a heavy bloomer! Dianthus does so well in my sandy soil. I started Arctic Fire from seeds this spring and each one was a mat at about a foot across by fall. I see you have Arctic Fire there too.

The phlox I like is Twinkle Mixed (drummondii, annual). It's cute little star shapes, with different striped and solid colours. These are a couple of my favourites ;)

Shelly sorry to hear you had health issues that slowed you down. I know the snow got here before I got everything done as well. But hey, there is always next year, ya know. The dreaming through the winter also helps.

I got Vesey's and Stokes catalogues yesterday. I am starting to make a list for Stokes already. Haha.

Wow, I had a good day in yesterday's mail. Vesey's, Stokes and T&T. Finally, some reading material. As Sharon said, T & M was out a couple of months ago and I didn't see anything that popped out at me.

Time to put the kettle on . . . grab my sofa blanket and curl up for the afternoon. Maybe the browsing will warm me up.

Regrading T & T: I have had good luck with seeds but so far their "plants" ( read cuttings) have not been good. They replaced my Dewdrop Honeysuckle but the second was as bad as the first as they both did not have active roots. I was able to make my own tip cutting from a lone shoot on the second plant (wish I would have thought of that on the first one) and was successful at getting it to grow.

My Dominion catalogue came yesterday. I haven't fully got through it but it has, so far, a few interesting things.

You sure have to do comparison shopping, though. One may be $.50 higher a packet on something but the next item is .$50 lower and you get 100 seeds instead of 75. I really wish I could just find one seedhouse to order from and know that I got the best deal on all of it!

Shauna, I find in most cases that Stokes and William Dam Seeds will have the best prices for the quanity of seed.

Any live plants in the Dominion catalogue will most likely be sold at Holes Greenhouse in better health and in size.

  • luv2gro

That's who still is missing - William Dam - and Lindenberg. Probably lots more to that I just can't name offhand.

You know, after being burned so badly by T & T, and living in close proximity to so many greenhouse/garden centres, I'm really hesitant to buy any live plants ever again. That doesn't apply to specialties like irises, dahlias or lilies. I still need to have something to satisfy the "fix". But most greenhouses will bring in most of the perennials, even if you ask them for something special.

I can't wait to start wintersowing, but I usally wait till the end of February. The wait is going to kill my bank account..lol

Anyway, I'm looking for any input on my selections. I am a little concerned about some being reseeders or invasive...

p.s. Hi Marcia...I will have pictures to show you of the work in progress by the weekend. Could use some input.

If you don't care about having exactly what's on your list, i can help you with some different morning glories, lavatera, nigella and gazania, and i have some cosmos 'Double Click' seeds as well.

I can't see anything in your list that has been invasive for me. Cosmos reseeds like crazy but i let it. If you want something reseeding and invasive, try verbascum! LOL

Looking forward to your pictures. You see that we have a gallery now, eh? Perfect for showing us what you've been up to!
