Decided to take a few pics.Hope You enjoy

I have no idea what type of moth this is.It was on the fence out by the street,when I took the dogs for a walk

The veggie garden

Pulled the remainder of the carrots & parsnips from one of the beds,to make room for Spring planting.I will be freezing these for later use

Next bed of carrots are ready for use,but I'll leave them in the ground & just pick as needed.The parsnips that I sowed next to these carrots never germinated,so I planted some shallots there.I've had a really hard time getting viable parsnip seed this season

Wild Blackberries are setting fruit

Wild Blueberrie bushes are starting to flower

Mother goose is sitting on a clutch of eggs.Hopefully We will get some goslings in about another 3 weeks

Dad is never far from Her & is doing a good job at protecting Her

This is My official "rabbit hunter".She goes into the woods every morning after her walk to dig for rabbits & bark at squirrels.She has never caught one yet,but it doesn't seem to dampen her spirits

wow, impressive! That's a luna moth, night flyer so they use it to sell the sleeping pill Lunesta.

Quick question about the carrots. How long can you leave them in the ground before they rot?

Looks good! I sort of look at weeding like house cleaning... yes, it could always be better, but as long as I can still find everything it's all good! I always keep a few weeds in my garden, either because they are tasty (dandelions, chickweed, purselane, etc.) or to provide food and shelter for beneficial insects, or as a "catch crop" for some of the baddies... this year, because of the rain, I'm leaving some extras to prevent all of my nice topsoil from washing away to the bottom of the garden! I figure if they are providing a service, they aren't really weeds. :) Also, I've seen pictures where people leave grass strips between their rows to help keep the soil cool (I think? Or something like that), so maybe that's where you're headed! Or you can get a nice stirrup hoe and take those bad boys out with just a little effort! Your squash sure look happy! Cheers! Sunni

ladypat- The lily bulb with daylilies bed was a new idea I got this spring. I have that row of Serviceberry shrubs which are the backdrop. Then theres a row of old Mary Todd yellow daylilies in front of the shrubs. My first idea was to plant more rows of daylilies in front but I am also crazy about bulb lilies so I decided to put in some rows of lily bulbs there also and finish off with more daylilies. That stringline was so I could get that front row of daylilies in straight. Then I have more daylilies comeing for the last row in front so I have to use the stringline again. Then I will put some edging pavers to finish off that garden bed. I put over 120 lily bulbs in there so it should be quite the show. Used Trumpets, Asiatics and some fancy hybrids. trailrunner- I think you are talking about the Bayer 3 in one. You don't need it. Only treat for insects if there is a big problem, not just because. Fertilizer is better off added as you need it and not overdosed with the spraying. All you need and all I use is the fungicide. Its Bayer Desease Control for Roses and it should be sprayed everytwo weeks.

cindeea---Good thing there are some plants that actually like the heat. I planted the yardlong beans in the same spot that I planted the regular pole beans last spring. As soon as the pole beans were done, I planted the yardlongs. They can be used just like regular green beans. The flavor is stronger. John---Sorry about your struggle with the peppers. Consider your situation a learning experience. When to plant and what variety chosen to grow can make all the difference. Feel free to email me with any specific questions. jkrup---Sweet Sunrise is a P. edulis. It is just one of several varieties that grow well here. This is the most prolific by far. Miranda---Strawberry and Lemon guavas are started by airlayers. wt---Thanks. Do you get channel 15? If you do, then you may get a chance to see more of my yard on TV. The program Gardener's Hotline is going to have me be their guest in November. They are going to be coming soon to film my yard and have me answer questions on growing fruits in Central Florida. This is quite an honor. leelee---The peppers are growing in a high concentration of purchased mushroom compost. If you saw my springtime peppers, they were huge. They are much smaller now but they keep on producing. They are in a shadier part of the garden and would like a little more shade. In fact, some of the peppers growing at the top of the plants get sunburn spots on them. I would say that the winning combo is fertile soil, adequate moisture, and some shade in the summer (and of course, variety selection). Christine

Thanks everyone and what a warm day it turned out yesterday after all that fog it got to 31degs. I love the damp foggy mornings also not that we get many here. Dee the garden is just about finished now though I did make a new bed for my Gerbera a few weeks back and I am thinking of another Rose bed but no more roses just giving them more space. We got 1200 used pavers given to us on Tuesday ( exchanged for hard yakka ) so I can see a few new raised beds getting made for extra vegies.. Hi Macbirch...I have a lot of Gerbera's now and those doubles are so beautiful and last a long time in the vase. Marion do you get Misty morning's like this..How is that packing going... Dear Rosalie::: No I have not mastered it yet..though I am trying hard between library books and video's and all those camera forums on the Internet...Today being a special day for me we are going into the big smoke to my favourite toy shop and Tony is going to buy me either another memory card two big ones are not enough for me or maybe a filter ??? Then there is that book shop, O decisions decisions but I will come back with something. Sorry I dont know the name of the Plumbago as I found it in a pile of rubbish when we bought this block it is not a really bright blue......Cheers...MM.

Lori,thanks for the I.d of the moth.I think my "rabbit hunter" may of eaten the "lunesta" moth,as she didn't even move when I just snapped this pic of her-I think she is done for the day :)

Jamie,I had some full grown carrots stay in the ground through the Summer last Year.I didn't have many rot,but if You start to see insect damage on the roots,or if they start to get tough,then it is probably best to just pull the lot & preserve them.
Hi Silvia,thanks as always.The parsnips grew really well & taste excellent.They are much larger than last Season,but I only had maybe 10% germination :(

Many thanks Tinae.I've never thought about doing a swap,but if ever You want to grab some wild blackberrie plants or Slash pine seedlings then I have plenty of those that can be dig up.

I want to be like you when I grow up. I'm just nursing my pepper plants from Doug and keeping my fingers crossed.

I agree with the rest of the folks, your garden is so amazingly neat. Mine on the other hand is a mess. Keep those photoes coming and maybe I get insprired. :o)

Great looking garden, maybe some day we'll get there. The only things I have going are some sugar-snap peas and some tomatoes and peppers in containers. A few carrots and some greens. I seem to be more successful at flowers, don't know why.

Thanks for the kind words.The veggie garden really isn't that much work,now that it is up & running.It did take me just over a year to put together though(& I'm still not fully done,as I want to add another greenhouse this year).I first had to cut down a huge dead oak tree & shred/chainsaw up all the limbs.Next came putting the fence around the garden.Then it was on to building each raised bed,double digging the existing soil(I have so much clay in the soil here)& finally filling with topsoil/compost.I would construct one bed at a time,plant it & then start building the next bed.I built a total of 24 full size beds(each 50sq ft)for the veggies,one of which is set aside permanently for asparagus.I also built 3 small beds for herbs,that are 20sq ft each.I'm trying something new this year,rather than having a compost pile,I am leaving 1 bed fallow & dumping all the compostable kitchen waste onto that bed.Also whatever gets grown in a bed i.e. corn or beans etc,gets run through a shredder after harvest & put back on the bed to act as mulch.
I do have my fare share of pests to deal with.Right now I have a huge problem with flea beetles on the turnips & cabbages.I also always have mole crickets,cutworms & later on corn ear worms.I've decided that I'm willing to take losses & so just plant extra.I don't use anything stronger than dish soap/water solution or BT for pest control.
Hope this gives some encouragement for anyone currently growing veggies or thinking about starting some.It is still such a great feeling being able to walk out to the garden & harvest something for dinner :) Once again thanks everyone for the kind words & I'll try & snap a few more pics
