Will flavor get better?

We're building up in mid-to-upper zone 7, so for my fig-loving husband I bought a 3-gallon Brown Turkey (labeled as at Home Depot, anyway) to grow by the house as it has a good, long record in this area. Our baby tree made us happy by producing nicely in its very first year, but flavor was lacking. When I asked him to describe it for you, he said "bland, not real figgy." Texture was fine.

So I'm wondering, does flavor typically tend to get better with age? Biggest concern at this point is actually whether it's a real Brown Turkey as this would be the time to replace. Are there known to be duds out there in commerce? It was from Home Depot. Thanks for any advice.
