All of you over in south TX are on my prayer list this morning... hope everyone is prepared and has a place to go if you haven't already left.

Blanca, So funny that you mention "happy" music for your plants. When I was in high school I did a comparison between plants grown from seeds under identical conditions; the only exception was that one group had Disney music played (it was an LP that played over and over automatically if that hints at the years). When I told the Disney company of my findings (don't know why I did, but guess I thought they should know that their music was involved in this positive study) they sent me a new LP!! Whoo hoo...I think I must have been 15. That was the same year that my biology teacher spent extra time before/after school and taught me meristem culture of orchids (I think that's what it was called). It involved taking pieces of an orchid, cutting it and plating it out on agar in flasks, and it grew into clumps of cells that would be transferred again and that made new baby epidendrum orchids. When I was in Costa Rica and saw fields of these red/orange orchids growing wild, I thought of Mr. Havickhorst. He was like a surrogate father to me (my own dad and I butted heads) and we still keep in touch!! OK...so that's way more than you wanted to know about me! Kristi

Hey Tally, I sympathize with you. We had a little house over in Gilchrist that had been in the family for over 50 years, all gone but the pilings. It wasn't much of a house, but my father's father bought it in 1948 for 2k. In it were Grandpa's old fishing hat with his favorite lures all rusty since he passed in '57. My dad loved the place and we have pictures of him holding up possibly every fish he ever caught off Boliver. Daddy passed in '03. His sister, my old Aunt Tressie had taken two old double beds down there that she didn't want any more, couple of solid walnut Jenny Lind beds. She passed in '72. The house had one of the old 'monitor top' refrigerators in it and the last time I was down there it was still working like the day it came out of the showroom. We didn't lose anything that was really valuable, per se, but we sure lost a lot. I feel sad when I think about it and can't decide if I want to go rummage around on Goat Island and hope to find some old treasure or just look at the pictures and remember it how it was. My brothers can't even talk about it cause all their best childhood memories of fishing with Dad were down there in Gilchrist. I realize that losing an old shack is nothing like losing your beloved trees and plantings. It will take another 100 years for you to get the trees back. It's just a darn shame that so many great things are gone with nothing left but the memories of how they were. E-mail me your address, I'll send you some seeds. And if you happen so see my grandfather's old fishing hat, just feel free to pass it along back to me. My brothers would love to have it. Cheryl

Ok, then she is tornado savvy, at least. (smile) As I recall, it was 3 days after Hurricane Donna, before the flooding receeded enough to drive on our street in Miami, and we were on the surge side of the storm. It wasn't too bad, but you do tend to wish for a bath. You flush the commodes from tub water filled up ahead of the storm, and of course, you store as much water as possible for drinking, and have as much edible food without cooking, on hand as possible. The power will usually be out for days, although the newer underground power subdivisions, have made that less of a problem, in the cities. Generally speaking, though, it is just like having to camp out in your house, because the yard is too wet, and you can't go anywhere, without a boat. If the water doesn't flood the house, itself, you will be ok, as long as the house doesn't sustain any major damage. The way they build houses these days, though, most frame homes can't withstand the full brunt of a hurricane. We had reinforced concrete block/stucco, with a gravel roof (wind can't get under the shingles), etc. when I lived in Miami. In later years, the building code got sloppy, and they allowed a bunch of frame houses, and then came Andrew. Hope they learned their lesson after that. They could learn a thing or two from Bermuda. As I feared, Ike probably has put Galveston Island on a 10 yr. recovery schedule, as of right now.

Ugghhh...want a mess. I'm glad you got through it without much problems. I have several friends down in Houston. I think there were all without power for awhile. One had a tree come down but missed their house, destroyed their fence and their neighbors roof. However, he has some minor roof damage with many shingles in the yard and a squisy carpet.

By the time we found out it was heading to Houston, I didn't have time to get back to take care of things around the house. So all of my containers are still in the backyard. Those of you north of me, watch out for flying fig trees.

James, I expect it will blow some of them over and rain on them, but I doubt they'll be seriously hurt. I hope you don't have any greenhouses or hoop houses. Supposed to get up to six inches of rain here, so Oklahoma figs may have wet feet.

I sure hope the people of Galveston and the lowands on the mainland had the good sense to get out.

Also 90,00 people falied to litsen and stayed in 3 county's

Oxankle 6 inches is a lot there saying we could get 2 to 5 depending if ike rides the jet stream as we are getting rain today from other normal circumstances, but heck usually we measure Snow in inches not so much rain.
Well i hope them in the best in Texas
James if you lose you tree's i'm sure we can help .

i pray for you guys down south in a fig haven and if you are in a big trouble you are welcome to my house , there will always be place for you to sleep in my house.

Thanks guys. I figured I accumulated them once, I can do so again... Same with most of the things in the house. I wasn't able to get my documents, photos, etc. out though. Fortunately, they were still in Rubbermaid totes from Rita three years ago. Hopefully they will float well.

I'm not so much worried about the wind as I am rising water. My house is about 5 miles from Galveston Bay near Seabrook, TX. BTW, this is the same Seabrook, TX where 'Banana' is reportedly to have come from. The water is suppose to raise dramatically in the area.

We'll see what Ike leaves behind on Sunday.

For those of you who use AOL there is a fine collection of photos of IKE. (perhaps these are on other servers as well.)Some featuring Seabrook as mentioned by James. Unfortunately, there appears to be a lot of flood water in Seabrook. Lets hope James didn't get as much as shown in these photos.

Hi All,

I had a neighbor check on my house...

The good news is my figs didn't blow away
The bad news is this is because two large Tallow trees in my back yard and a very large Arizona Ash in a neighbor's yard have fallen and crushed them.

She wasn't really able to get into the back yard to see if there was damage to the house. My house sits ~20' above sea level, so it didn't take in any water (at least no rising water). I'm heading back in the morning to start clean-up.

Seabrook (only about 7 miles from my house) didn't fair so well. There looks like a lot of rising water damage there, Kemah, Bacliff, Taylor Lake Village, parts of Pasadena, San Leon, Nassau Bay, etc. All of these city/towns are in close proximity to me. There is still no power in the area (and not expected to be for some time) so I can't post photos when I get back. I can, however, send pics via email through my phone (I am getting phone calls from friends in the area)... if anyone wants to receive them and post them on this forum.

All my people down there are safe; a friend had a large tree fall thru the roof but is fine. No other damage reported by those I know.

It amounted to nothing here in OK; the "six to twelve" rain they reported four days ago turned out to be an off and on rain all day long and I doubt we got two inches. Wind never got over 20, 25 mph in gusts.

I lived thru three large storms in Port Lavaca growing up and I respect those things, but they are as natural as acne so you just don't go where they are likely to be.

Don't build where it is only six feet above sea level. Don't live on the Gulf beach unless you are willing to bail at a moment's notice. I've seen Port O'Connor when all that was left were slabs with broken pipes sticking out of them. Don't mess with hurricanes needlessly.

James; please give us a report when you've seen it all.

Hello out there!

We are alive & well up here in the Pine curtain!
No property damage at all. We got real lucky on this one!

We lost power & water for about 30 hrs. all have been restored now.
James I can post your pictures for ya!

Great news hearing some of you are ok. From what we see on the news here lot of area's did not do well at all like Gavelston . Lots of rain spread out over the midwest and Ike added to chicago's rainfall for a total of 9 inches over the weekend. I have never seen it rain 6 and a half inches in 1 day though as some area's people were evacuated by boat when chicago and desplaines rivers overflowed,one man is missing in town next to mine when Hickory creek flooded parts of that area and he was caught in it. in my area we did ok. Main thing i guess is that not to many people died but a lot are suffering in those coastal area's.
