I wonder how old your tree is ?,and if you oiled it.
Mine are a little back,yet my tree froze to ground and started from there this year(Second).Regards

I didn't oil these. I got this from George last year (Thanks George). I don't quite remember if he said it was in its 2nd or 3rd year. So, that would make it 3 to 5 years old.

I was wondering if yours came from me (originally from EL)!
Yours look more roundish from the few I got previously,
and the insides looks MUCH more eye appealing to me
(reddish and juicey!). At least, I now have a better hope
for it. I guess having a small 'open' fig (different
micro-climate) makes a difference. Mine is now loaded
with ~1" figlets, but none is near ripening yet. Maybe
I will use the oiling method for the first time soon...

P.S. In my mind my VdB, LSU.P and PN look somewhat similar,
and before I say anything about any, I have to stop and
think to make sure I am talking straight...

I got 2 or 3 last year and I remember them being not as round as they are this year, smaller too. The PN you gave me late last year (the one with the sliced in half root ball) grew good but started putting on figs way late so I plucked them off. Try oiling a few, it might work on VDB but I think it may have more to do with how mature the fruit are not the variety. I was alarmed by the amount of ants it seemed to attract. I used extra virgin olive oil. Maybe next time I should use some cheap low grade oo, since they love figs they obviously have good taste. I haven't seen a ripe LSUp yet, maybe next year.

The Vista Mission, Black Madeira and Reverted Pan (Thanks Jon for all 3) all grew good though no ripe figs this year. If they make it through the winter (knock on wood) I should have some air-layers for you early spring.

Since it seems that I am in the presence of experts here, let me ask you a question.

I too have a Vilot Dr Bordeaux (Negronne) but I have never successfully gotten an editable fig off of it. Every year without fail it has produced figs and every year winter comes before they ripen.

Now this past winter for the first time, I cut the tree back to be about 3-4 feet tall and wrapped it up for winter. I am glad to report that for the first time the tree did not die back to the ground. The tree is about 4 years old.

The tree is larger now than it has ever been (about 7-8 feet tall and about 10-11 feet wide and has about 30-45 figs on it. All of these figs are still green and are showing some "ribbing".

Here are my questions

1. is it normal to have "ribbing" with this type of fig
2. When should I expect to have these figs actually ripen? I live in Frederick, Maryland. The zone charts are never clear enough for me to actually determine a zone but I imagine that I am around zone 6

What is this "oiling" that everyone is talking about and how does one oil a fig?

One also has to keep in mind that most commercial sellers
do NOT stock the source of their offerings. Some get stock
from multiple secondary sources that may vary from year to
year (and are at their mercy)...
