Jon's Florea fig pixes

Here is the 9 yrs old Florea

Never protected,fertilised,only once pruned shaped by me.

Jon ,likes the fruits,I do not.

My granddoughter likes them too,so he gave her a box today.

Jon is harvesting main crop for 2 weeks now.

I do not have any ripe on my trees.

If i only could like the taste of Florea ????

gorgi: There is sawdust from two varieties of tree (wood) that I would not advise others to use for rooting cuttings. Although I have no specific evidence that either would cause harm to a cutting, I have plenty of evidence that they will cause harm to YOU--in that they will burn the hail out of your skin when they are damp and come in contact with skin. Cedar contains cedar oil--it is used in moth balls and as a (natural) pesticide for fleas on animals, but it burns human skin upon contact, particularly when damp (as in rooting cuttings) and allowed to contact skin. I used to cut trees with a chainsaw--the cedar sawdust that adhered to my (perspiring) arms in Summer burned my skin and left a rash. The longer in remained on my skin (and the skin of others cutting Cedar) the deeper and more-severly it burned--if causes a rash if only briefly exposed. I have no idea as to its effects on cuttings. Something of note is that it is also used as a mold and mildew preventive, so maybe sprinkling a BIT among other sawdust or shavings would deter mold (maybe worth a try). I'm certainly not trying to keep anyone from trialing it--who knows, it may BURN the bark of the cutting, and cause it to root--just relating what it does in contact with skin. The oil (Juglone) from Black Walnut sawdust and shavings does the same to human skin, and there are instances in the literature where its use in horse stalls has sickened horses (though I'm not aware that it has ever killed a horse). Again, in cutting Black Walnut trees, the sawdust from it has burnt my skin on many occasions, and every other woodcutter I know of. Most people are probably aware that certain plants will not grow within a 50-80 foot (16-28 meter) radius of Black Walnut, because of the Juglone produced by its roots. Most vegetable members of the Solanaceae family (Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplant, and Potatoes) are highly susceptible, and I've had mature Tomato plants killed smack-dead that were 75 feet (25 meters) away from a Black Walnut tree. Thanks, Gene, that straightened me out on Brown Turkey names. No wonder figs drive you crazy. Jon's website shows lots of Brown Turkeys that look like mine, but Herman has showed some pictures from the web that look like his. Mine sure don't look (or taste) like Herman's, though. No long necks, pulp is only light strawberry, not red. Herman, I'm so jealous. You wouldn't save me a cutting or two this winter so I could try it out in Georgia, would you? I keep thinking those long necks will shed the rain like Hunt. I probably don't have anything you are interested in, but do have a Celeste that hasn't dropped figs in our 100 degree heat and drought this summer, also Peter's Honey that is just ripening now. Well I had to wait till today to get 2 of each. These cultivars are not the largest,insignificant,as comercial,cold Hardiness ?,Not very early,YET:They satisfy best my taste buds. Hope in being succesfull in growing them here forever. Blue Celeste still tends to drop some fruits,but i will keep it any way. Top:Vista Mission,Right:Blue Celeste,Left:Violette de Bordeaux

Hi ej3p They are located in Orleans, California- way up north toward the coast near the Oregon border. We plan on visiting them next Spring as we return from a trip to Bandon, Oregon for a much-needed vaca. Their url is www.rollingrivernursery.com. I bought these through the mail. They were very nice and called me to let me know that since I was located in California also, the shipping charges would be about half what I had originally-expected to pay. I thought that was really cool. I will be ordering from them again next year (although a bit earlier) so as to take advantage of the varieties that were "sold out" this year. My good guess, he is his close-by friend, whose fig I saw and testify for, & got some cuttings. I send an extra
rooting to Jon, and now it's fruit is coming back to H's
grand lovely dauther.

Cecil and George:That is my frind Jon in Beverly NJ,Just 3 miles west from me.
It is not Jon from San Diego,the author of Figs4fun Forum.
I know Jon in San Diego has one Florea fig too.
I also bet it is very good tasting ,in Ca.,because that tree needs dry climate,i think.
We will find out,from Jon in San Diego,when the tree will be fruitting there.
I think his ,is a young fig,still.
One day I will Place my picture here ,but,not now.

So:Those fruits are from the,New Jersey fig,that is the point.
I do not know anybody to have ripe main figs now,so early,while Jon,harvests figs starting on Aug 1st,2009,from his Florea fig,right here in New Jersey.
What I am looking for is finding another cultivar,the same early like this one,but with better tasting fruits.
It is impossible that Florea is the only early fig,and there are no others.
So far I had no luck.
All the varieties I trialed are late ripening compared to Florea fig.
If you know another one Please let me know.

pastiliere, ronde de bordeaux and negretta iv'e read are suppose to be early ripeing figs not sure how true. I have the 3 but are young. Perhaps they are early riper where they came from but in seasons yet to come i will see how they do for me in containers as i sought something earlier to ripe also. Do you grow any of those?
