I mail mine through the post office. Prioty Mail usually! It depends on whether you are sending them out of the USA as to whether an inspection is needed...Ellie

What is the best way to prepare them for shipping? I assume cut the foliage down but do you wrap foil around the rootball or remove the soil?

I remove the soil and wash the roots well, take off any ragged looking foliage, cut back healthy foliage. Let them dry then wrap the roots in newspapers (do not wrap in plastic) and put them in a box. If there is space left in the box, I stuff more newspaper in to keep the daylilies from getting banged around during shipping.
I also use priority mail to ship mine.

I do the same as Jan - clean well, trim foliage, dry and then wrap w/ newspaper, put extra newspaper in if needed. Also use the Priority Mail boxes (which you can order online - very easy). Seems to work well!

i'm thinking that i'll give away what i don't want when it comes time. good to know that i can legally mail them.

Some states have restrictions on mailing live plants. California, Washington state, Arizona and I think Oregon are particular. Check with your post office or your recipient's before mailing live plants. It would be a shame to mail them and have them destroyed.

I'm not sure you can legally ship from any state without an Inspection sticker on the outside of the box. I know Alabama is very strict about this. My outgoing boxes are all marked LIVE PLANTS and have the Inspection sticker stuck to the outside of the box, staing that the box may be opened for inspection.Don't really know about other states, but I assumed it was the same everywhere. USPS is definitely the best way to send them. Almost an entire shipment of daylilies sent to me from Brown's Ferry by UPS in their brown truck got so overheated during their trip up here to the country in this hot Texas sun, they died from crown rot. I'm assuming the reason they died so soon was due to being overheated. The vendor wouldn't replace them, so I was out a tidy sum.

Eclectic Gardens in Oregon sent me a really great order, each one had the roots nicely wrapped in white floral paper. They were so clean, and so well-protected, I was quite impressed. I just had to ask the vendor what kind of paper she used, since I hadn't seen white floral paper. The plants all arrived in excellent condition.
