Something unusual and LOW for shady spots?

I'm looking for something low growing--less than two feet tall--for planting beneath some cabbage palms. The shade is pretty dense because of nearby trees/structures. I've been experimenting with herbs that are said to take part-shade, but they're just not getting enough light to do well. I want to replace them with something that will thrive in shade, but also has other qualities going for it. Something fragrant would be nice, or something interesting or unusual in some other way--edible, or scented leaves, etc.

I've considered dwarf gardenias, or four o'clocks (too tall probably), but I'm afraid they won't get enough light. Anyone have suggestions?

I've planted and replanted this area I don't know how many times and I'm never happy with it. I have a bunch of mondo grass I could use, but I'd really like to go with something more unusual.

Thanks

Bill
