Figs in Zone 8A

I will be taking a fig tree to a friend in zone 8A (south myrtle beach, NC)

Can she plant and leave out all winter? Will it need to be mulched or protected in any way?

The fig tree will be ok in the ground at Myrtle Beach. In years past, I have seen some very old large trees, but unfortunately. they are gone due to "modern development". The temperature at Myrtle Beach is greatly moderated by the ocean. I live about 60-70 miles inland in NC a few miles from the SC state line and all of mine are in the ground and only a little tip damage every once in a while.

I just checked the low temp at Myrtle Beach for 1/20/08
It got down to 26 degrees that day(or night?)

Will a small 2' fig plant survive in-ground at those temps?
The reason I ask is I have a small in-ground tender fig plant in ground that I was thinking I would have to cover
here in Z8 E. Tx, our temps can get that low, maybe a little lower (22 degrees or so.

Actually, I just remembered a long time ago my friend had a California fan palm in his back yard, and it was grown locally from seed. I believe it was in the ground for quiet a few years and it was well established. It pulled through the winters unprotected, but his neighbor hood "code" made him cut it down because it still had the beard on it and even when pruned they still did not like it, he was not so happy about that. But I think I will be going with the California fan palm. Our winters are dry and it only gets really cold here for about 2 weeks until it starts to warm up. I'll give it a try!

I'm in zone 7b one state south of you in Raleigh. I have a large fruit and veg garden as well as a greenhouse for tropicals. I get more fruit off of the potted plants in the greenhouse or outside than I do off of any of the fruit trees. The potted super dwarf peaches and nectarines are less work and out produce the trees in the ground by a long shot. Citrus in pots (large or small) can produce a lot of fruit, same with guavas. Kumquats do well in pots and handle some cold but fruit better in a greenhouse. There are citrus hybrids that will survive your area but the fruit is usually pretty harsh and resinous (I still eat them). Besides figs, you should try Pineapple Guava also known as Feijoa, its a guava relative that is pretty cold hardy. The fruit has its own special flavor that not everybody loves. Kiwi vines are super productive but they take up a lot of space and require a lot of pruning - I mean constant pruning to keep them in line. Grapes and muscadines are good for grapes. Check out Ediblelandscaping.com in Afton VA. That's where most of the odd ball fruit growers around here buy their plants. Worth the drive and you can check out Monticello while you're in the neighborhood.

Am doing landscape architecture and consulting for garden owners in another country. I guess your question is too open without any narrowing down re color etc. how large a space are we talking about, just a couple of square feet? soil? and any tree usually does not need trimming, you might want to prune it if it gets too big. could be helpful to get a landscape architect/ plants person for a 1-3 hour long consulting onto your property, leaving you with plant lists and some sketch as a result that could avoid a lot of mistakes, boost your learning curve and probably save money & time in the long run. just my 2 cents, best of luck, Lin

I have a large garden on my property that is never dry, and sometimes if we have rain for several days in a row it's downright gushy. I've been trying various plants in it that supposedly like moist soil for 5 years and most of them don't make it. The soil is clay but has been amended continuously. This garden gets sun in mid-morning and through afternoon, depending on the time of year. So far, Japanese forest grass does very well and a Turtlehead is surviving this year. I have read that EE's like wet soil, so I'd like to try some. I will plant 7 (or maybe I'll start with 3 and see how it goes). The middle one will be the tallest (5' or so would look nice) with the rest getting gradually shorter, and that's one of my questions--can anyone suggest EEs that grow to about 5' and some others that grow to 4' and 3'? My other question is should I buy them already growing in pots this fall, take them out of the pots and plant them in the ground, or leave them in their pots and put those pots in the ground? Oh, also, is fall a good time to plant a growing EE or should I wait until spring and plant them as bulbs?

Linda, I don't have any idea what zone I am in, but I am growing figs in South East Pennsylvania, and I have a ton of them ripening since August 20. The tree dies back every winter, and we cut off the dead branches, and cut back the living ones severely every winter. We have had the tree for about 8 years now. We wrapped it against winter for the first 2 years only, and have not given it any special treatment since other than a 3 or 4 inch layer of mulch and occasional watering. It is a great looking bush, a little over 6 1/2 feet tall and full if fruit for the last 5 or 6 years. It keeps improving with age.

Plant it in a good hole and a little humus and don't worry about it.

It is sort of a hard question to answer as there so many things that can help or hurt. My experience has been no damage to young plants at
15-20 degrees. My property line has mature oaks and pines to the north, my property has a gentile slope which rolls frost and cold air to a lower area.

I hope that you escape 'Gustaf' without any problems.

Thanks Jack,

Your not going to believe it but we have Pine trees to the north with a slope downhill toward the north!
So we have something in common, now what we are not going to have in common is the amount of Fig trees me & you have, 90 something would have me begging the Wife to let me sleep in the house instead of in Rover's house.
We are about 200mi from the Gulf Coast so not many worries about that Mr. Gustav
