Daylily leaf streak

Anyone else experiencing this more than usual with their daylilies this year? I wanted to take some photos but altho the blooms are beautiful, the foliage is awful. We had alot of rainy wet days early on, I suppose it could be that and I know it isn't daylily rust (cross fingers).

It's normal for me to see some yellowing, but not like this; and the funny thing is the ones that need dividing are much less affected than the others with plenty of sun and air.

I too am not happy with my daylilies. I had the exact same thoughts as you posted here just today as I saw them starting to bloom. Flowers look great but the leaves are sad looking. I thought it was that I need to move them somewhere else. They are on an exposed spot and under an eve so I thought maybe not enough water...but the foxgloves and everything else there are doing just fine.

I hope someone with some knowledge can shed some light.

I don't know much, but I'll try. Hope you're still reading, geebee. Nothing fancy here, I have a few Stella D'ors, in their 7th season this year. Over the past two years I've had more yellowing/browning out at ground level - still good blossoms, but waning. I meant to lift & divide them last fall and again early this spring - but, I failed to do so. They got really sad looking this summer and I did the divisions mid-July and hoped for the best. I divided two in half and another in thirds. The little pieces I put back in my ground are looking very perky and the pieces I gave away are holding their own too. So, maybe you don't have a fungus, but just a need to lift and divide?

I can only tell you what I do, so don't take it as being a definative answer. I have had a rust problem amd bit the bullet (or maybe its I took a bullet in $$$) based on the recommendations of a commercial operation in southheast North Carolina (since I spent a few hours with them a couple of years ago). I've since been told that the same fungicides work for leaf streak. However, Mancozeb is not so terribly expensive and is a contact killer for the rust spores, so it should kill-on-contact for leaf streak fungus too. This was not among the original recommendations, however. Those were to alternate between two different strobulines (the ones that are made out of gold or something equally expensive), Compass and Strike. I was later told by a very knowledgeable lady in Canada that you should not atlernate between two of these chemicals because resistance can be acquired, and once it is acquired, it will block all strobulins. So this year's plan is to rotate three - Mancozeb, Strike, and Compass. For me (and a University of Gerogia study agreed!!) one of the two strobulins really does not control rust very well while the other is much better, so I might eliminate the poorer one. I just can't remember which one it is at the minute. Note that there are everal different types of strobulins, but the one in Heritage was the most effective in the UGA study. I've attached the link to their PowerPoint presentation. Go through it until you find their conclusions and recommendations. Their recommendation is to use one of the sort-of systemic ones that works and alternate that with Mancozeb. That should take care of the leaf streak and any runs that gets blow in by the wind. For rust, you have to continue this all season if you don't it to show up once the weather breaks - - for us that is mid-to-late September I am assuming that since this works for rust, it will work for leaf streak funguds too. It is caused by a fungus and will spread to other plants.I spray with Cleary's in the spring to control it.

Something new ( to plague our favorite flower!) this year is leaf miners. Although I'd seen leaf miners on columbines,2009 was the first year that leaf miners seem to be on daylilies. Your description sounds like leaf miners. If you have ever seen them on columbine foliage, it looks about the same on daylily foliage. I saw it at some Regional tour gardens this summer and have seen some of it here. Best treatment is a systemic insecticide. I have used the Bayer Systemic rose 2 in 1 where I've seen it here.

Thanks for the link. I read somewhere else that it is a fungus, perhaps next year I'll try spraying. Have never done that so I'll have to learn by doing I guess.

The condition seems to skip a year in my garden. Maybe I'm not disposing of the infected foliage properly, I just toss instead of burning.

Yes, mine are looking awfully shabby. I write it off to our wetter than usual spring and the fact that my dh waters my flowerbeds - VERY OFTEN - and always overhead. (I'm also blaming him for the prostration of most of my black eyed susans and for my grasses looking like they are having bad hair days. LOL) Oh well...he is retired and it is one of the very few things he is happy to do while I'm at work. And it does save me a lot of time and probably keeps many plants alive during our blazing hot weather.

In my garden, daylily foliage always looks ratty after they bloom. This year, I noticed that one plant in a little patch of mine (which consist of three daylilies, lol) is looking crummy while the others are not. It is having similar foliage problems. It is on the outside of the daylily triad, where there is less moisture. Maybe a bit of compost will help?? I just keep trying to come up with excuses- I reeeally don't wan't to just throw it away. Hopefully this isn't catching...

I have at least 85 kinds of daylilies, and I have this on nearly every single plant. I have no idea where it came from. I'm relieved that it isn't rust, though...I pull these icky leaves and don't put them in my compost, but I bet it never goes away. My flowers are gorgeous, but oh, the leaves. Sigh...

One year I blamed it on the hardwood mulch I used, maybe I put too much on the beds and around the plants; but I have used only leaf mulch for the last three years and I still have yellow leaves. As I said though, some years are worse than others.

Do you notice if the yellow comes on when the plant begins to bloom or before?
