A Lady, Fuji and several late bloomers for Monday

The big flush of blooms is gone now, except in two of my raised beds that are filled with ML and late bloomers. There are spots of colors here and there though.

LADY BETTY FRETZ began reblooming today on a very short scape.

FIRES OF FUJI is usually a gorgeous clump, but between the dry weather, attacks by grasshoppers and not enough sun, there are only a few blooms this time.

EL DESPERADO began its parade of blooms about four days ago. Today there was an avalanche of blooms. This late bloomer is definitely one of my best budded and branched this year.

WILD APPLE AUTUMN, a late I got this spring, is blooming very nicely now and has rebloom scapes coming.

REGAL FINALE, another late, with recurved petals in the very hot temperatures.

PURIFY MY HEART is still pumping out multiple blooms each day.

WILLOW DEAN SMITH makes a wonderful clump!

A LITTLE FIRE, SCARECROW always looks cheerful and bright.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS had its ffo today. This is one of two late bloomers I got from Judy Davisson. It's a diploid, while most of her intros are tets.

I'll end with RUFFLED STRAWBERRY PARFAIT, a Reckamp late bloomer.

Willow Dean Smith is so nice...when does Rice usually have his clump sale?

And Ruffled Strawberry Parfait is very nice. Any rebloom?

OH MY GOODNESS> THEY are all just beautiful. no sense in me trying to pick a favorite as I can not just pick one.I love EL DESPERADO.MINE IS STILL NOT BLOOMING AND i STILL DONT SEE A SCAPE. I will just have to dig it up and pot it so I can have blooms, too. I just love WILLOW DEAN SMITH.it REMINDS ME OF BEAUTIFUL EDGINGS, which I dearly love too.RUFFLED STRAWBERRY PHARFAIT is a beauty, too.I love them all, well, maybe with just the exception of one and I love its color, just not the form.

Happy Birthday Rick, but you sure aren't giving us much in the way of information about either your tree or your plans for planting it. Is it a container tree or bare root? Why is it so big? Smaller, bare root trees usually do better than large potted trees. Did you plant it in the ground yet, or will you grow on in the container? Where did your wife buy the tree, and did they tell her what rootstock it is on? If not, can she still ask them? All of these factors, plus several more, will determine when, if ever, your apple tree will bear fruit. Fuji is a late ripening apple, and I hope your season is long enough to allow it to ripen. Excellent post (as always) Debra! I can always count on you for such good advice and wonderful pictures. Since I'm just starting out with daylilies, it is very helpful to know which are the lates. (You and Rita are the queens of the enablers, you know!). I am taking notes because I need to have more late-bloomers. It is so, so difficult to choose any one favorite of those you posted. I can see that I would want ALL of them! Do you remember where you got 'Adrienne's Surprise'? I really like that one, and 'Techny Peace' as well. I have long admired 'Magnificent Dad' and always think I should get it to honor my Dad. Wonder how it would do in zone 4? 'Charlie' is one I remember from another post and that I really LOVED it...so adorable. And I love your unusual forms too. I pretty much like all daylilies (the only ones I am sick of are the orange ditch lilies because they are growing wild everywhere up here and folks who don't give a hoot about gardening dig them up off the sides of roads and that is ALL they plant in their yards!! Suz, Like Rob, I'm no expert, but I'll give you any info I can. First of all, your Morning Glories won't be Spring bloomers, and I don't think they're your best choice for hummers. A better choice (and still in the Morning Glory family) is Cypress Vine (Hiedra colorada). You can get the seeds at Walmart, and they will quickly fill in a trellis. My hummers love the beautiful red flowers. Nasturtiums are well behaved in pots, and aren't too fussy about sunlight, as long as they get 3-4 hours at some point during the day. 'Empress of India' is a beautiful red variety, and the seeds can also be bought at WM. As Rob has suggested, a good idea is to get Salvias from a nursery. I got a six-pack of 'Lady in Red' last year for about $3, and they were bloomin' in no time. 'Black & Blue' and 'Hot Lips' are 2 other good varieties, and the 'B&B' would do well in your 14" X 14.5" pot. Someone posted a chart on this forum last year that listed the sugar content of nectar from various flowers. The nectar from 'Lady in Red' was almost 1/3 sugar; that's like us mixing nectar at a 1:2 ratio instead of a 1:4!! And yes, the traffic will pick up here as the hummers move North, but it will never get so busy that you can't catch up if you miss 3-4 days. Here is what Cypress vine looks like in full bloom:

I think I must be behind because my obedient plants haven't starting blooming yet. I also have some of the later salvias and they are just starting to bloom. But I will definitely look into some of the others that you all mentioned. My butterfly bushes really took a beating last winter so they are blooming but not as in years past. MeMyselfandI - I have several of the agastaches but they look PITIFUL this year. They were gorgeous last year and the butterflies loved them but this year they barely made it up and are pale yellow and no blooms. I am so disappointed - where do you have yours planted? Anika - I think last year was the first time the Rices had a clump sale. A notice about it came up on the Thoroughbred website in late July. Rita was the one who let all of us Garden Webbers know. The sale continued on into the fall until all the clumps they needed to move out were gone. The prices were really good for the number of fans they sent. You might want to just keep checking their website to see if they have another clump sale, or email them and ask. I was very pleased with the plants I got.

Ruffled Strawberry Parfait, unfortunately, is not a rebloomer.

The pastels are my favorites (Purify My Heart and Willow Dean Smith), but every time I see a photo of El Desperado, I'm more and more impressed.

Jean - I know which one you don't like. :)

Chris - If you don't have El Desperado you're really missing out on a very floriferous late bloomer. Willow Dean Smith and Purify Your Heart would grow great for you, since they're both from northern hybridizers.

Well, I have three favorites today. PURIFY MY HEART which is a favorite daylily of mine, WILLOW DEAN SMITH which always seems to look great (great group shot there) and last but not least A LITTLE FIRE SCARECROW which I just love the color and pattern. It just looks so cheerey!

Can't pick a favorite as they could all come and live here. I do have Fires Of Fuji (2 clumps) and they are loaded with buds as does El Desperado. However, your pic of RUFFLED STRAWBERRY PARFAIT has me thinking to go look that one up.

Rita - I wouldn't have Purify My Heart and Willow Dean Smith if I hadn't seen the beautiful photos of them growing in your garden. They both seem to be great performers. Purify My Heart has double scaped two years in a row for instant rebloom. And Willow Dean Smith seems to want to set every pod - not matter how hot it is. I keep having to break bee pods off the scapes.

Julia - Ruffled Strawberry Parfait has not been the performer I hoped it would be. I've had it four years, and I've yet to see much of a bud count on it. It does multiply faster than some of my other Reckamp Khlems.

dean Smith is really lovely, Debra. The weather is the pits, isn't it? No rain. Heat. But the daylilies bloom on. El Desperado is strutting its stuff. What a great plant it is.
Wild Apple Autumn is a pretty thing, and A Little Fire Scarecrow is always a treat to see.

I like the edge on Lady Fretz. A clear separation of colors. Pretty complicated to do that I would think. And of course I like everything else, but Regal Finale caught my eye so much I just had to look it up. An oldie but perhaps still a goldie? I like the bagel form too on it. Does it keep that dark velvety color by the late PM?.....Maryl

Maryl - Regal Finale only shows the bagel form in scalding hot temps. But being in Oklahoma, you get those kinds of summer temperatures. It does hold its color pretty well, and from a distance still looks good in the evening. Mine is pretty marred by pollen spill and bug damage by evening. This is the second year for Regal Finale in my garden. It clumps up very quickly, and seems to be doing some bud building this season.

Kay - One of the things I like about Wild Apple Autumn is the red veining on the petals. It gives the flower a lot more texture, and I think makes it a more interesting eyed and edged cultivar.

Wow, that El Desperado is just covered in blooms! I can't pick a favorite yet again, they are all beauties. Willow Dean Smith is super, I love ENEs. Good to know that it and Purify My Heart are from northern hybridizers (I should google them). Ruffled Strawberry Parfait is very nice, I think you mentioned that before that Reckamps don't multiply well. I remember thinking I wouldn't mind that because the space is so tight ;) Love Regal Finale too, reminds me slightly of Night Beacon with that combination of colors, looks great with recurved petals

Thanks Debra for the response. At 105 yesterday and much the same predicted for the rest of the week, I'd say not only would Regale Finale roll up into the bagel form, but I may do so as well.... Out of ignorance I ask this question. You mentioned the pollen spill, and it is distracting on darker daylilies. Are breeders trying to eliminate that now? Maybe it can't be eliminated?.....Maryl

Nat - The Reckamps just don't multiply well in the South. They don't get enough of a cold period to build a big crown. I'm sure they would multiply fine in your zone.

Maryl - The pollen spill is definitely distracting on dark daylilies. As far as I know, there aren't hybridizers trying to eliminate pollen. They can sell their daylilies for more money if they are fertile.
