Trader Joe's has fresh figs

I was in Trader Joe's yesterday and guess what I found? Fresh Calif. figs in 1 lb containers! They are black figs with a strawberry center, very sweet and tasty. The fruit is fairly small though, size of a quarter or just a bit bigger. I was able to eat the skin as it was very thin. I don't know the variety. I need to go back and get another one or two...the one's I bought yesterday...are gone. :-)

Black mission, of course. They are ok when you buy them dried in a container but they are uncomparable in taste when you sun dry them yourself (without the crappy preservative that is added to the container figs). There is a 37 acre black mission orchard up here in northern California. 4000 lbs of dried figs per acre and all are harvested for the dried fruit market. FF

I love TJs....we don't get wine in grocery stores here so I've never had the $$ chuck...but would love to try it some time. I've been addicted at various times to various things at TJs including their meringue cookies and their chocolate nonpareils. While their cookies are very tasty, I don't find any soft and chewy type. Great selection of chocolates from around the world....can use it like wine tasting. We always shop there for crackers as their selection of whole grain and multi grain is the best. Love their edamame crackers. I also get my whole wheat english muffins there. If any of you, like I, have certain issues, try their 100% cranberry juice. I put just a splash in a tall glass of seltzer and it is amazing. So different from the usual sugary water with some cranberry in it. Lately I've been buying their grass fed beef and it is incredibly flavorful, besides not having any pink slime (bleccch). But whenever I'm baking anything that calls for chocolate, I always buy their belgian chocolate. I make a chocolate lava cake using their dark pounder plus and it is A -MAZ -ING! I recently made Awesome Brownies using their chocolate as well. Excellent! I also buy their lightly salted mixed nuts and get other nuts there for baking and eating. But in our area, TJs prices their bananas by the "each" not "lb". Once I bought one of their chicken sausages that was really good, but since then, i can't seem to buy the right one again....they have several. I've been not happy with their frozen foods but based on your recommendations, will have to try some again. I typically don't eat any frozen prepared foods as I make my own.

Dave and Steve, the Prague citsuma is doing great. It is a slow-growing tree, but it grew quite a bit this year in the ground. We have had lows in the mid-20s I think so far and it has not had any issues. I'll post a pic of it tomorrow. Alexander is doing very well. I moved him closer to the windows in my sunroom this year and I've kept it as cold as possible. He seems to like that. I noticed with the Meyers that the colder it is, the fewer leaves they drop. I understand the relationship between light needs and temperature, but the other trees are not as susceptible to leaf drop. The cold does them good. Dave, I gave away my big oroblanco. I'm glad you got the cutting when you did. I love the flowers, but I am just not a fan of grapefruit. I only kept one grapefruit because it is a more compact tree and easier to manage - a red ruby. The flower of that one also smells great. I just give the fruit to my mom ;)

Brined Turkey from Trader Joe's?

DD prepared her first turkey from scratch and took her friends' advice and bought the brined turkey from Trader Joe's. She followed directions but was so disappointed. It had no drippings in the bottom of the pan, so no drippings for making tasty gravy. It was also dry. She says next time she will follow my advice and buy a fresh turkey. Has anyone else been disappointed by the TJ brined turkey?

Here's what works for crowds at my store: There are the early birds who are practically standing in line at 8 when they open. They are mostly finished and in the checkout lines by 8:20 or 8:30, so I try to get there at that time, as it picks up again after 9 a.m. It also is less crowded close to closing. I raced in one time about 10 min before closing and as I checked out and commented that I almost didn't make it before closing, the worker told me that if you're in the store at closing, they don't shoo you out. They are there stocking until later anyway, so they leave you in peace to finish up. At closing, they may be out of stuff on the shelves, tho, but often it's in the back waiting to be put on the shelves. They are GREAT about checking for you and bringing what you need out of the back, if it's there.

I'm interested to learn more about drying figs. I have two trees in the backyard here in Glendale CA that are more than we can eat fresh. I've researched some dehyradrators and have decided to go with Cabela's "smaller" (80 liter) version "commerical" version. Does anyone have any insights into drying figs? The idea of sun drying sounds nice but impractical (having to take them inside every night) any suggestions welcomed. thanks

Set a square floor fan flat on ground, set on 2 two by fours to keep it off the ground. The fan is now facing the ceiling. Place a fiberglass air conditioner filter flat on the fan. Place figs, either halved or whole, on the filters (filters). You can stack several filters with figs atop each other. I have this contration on my back deck in the sun. Put a filter over the last figs placed on the stack. A couple of wires draped over the filters and figs will hold it all down and safe from critters. Put fan on low. No need to bring it into the house. A few days should do the trick. No need to pay for pricey commercial dryers. FF

I am looking to source approx 30,000 lbs of dried mission figs.

Could you let me know if you know anyone that would have such volume? Your help is appreciated.

Hi, i sun dired about 50 figs this year on patio table on a clean plwood board covered with cheesecloth over board and then covered figs with cheesecloth as well, it was during a warm week with lots of sun in full sun , i did not have to bring them in at night as that week we did not have rain and the humidity was good, about 4 to 5 days with skin on and skin just slightly sliced with sharp knife and they dried very well, i also dried some Roma plum tomato's i grew from seed this year for the first time as well and put in olive oil in jar and to my surprise when eaten they had a roasted taste, they were very good in sandwhiches. But to dry many figs and or tomato's would take some work so maybe some sort of comercial dryer would be needed, next year if weather cooperates though i hope to dry well over a hundred as 50 does not last very long and were gone before our first snow. I cant find the pictures of them sorry but you could see what looked like little sparkly things on them the Sals tree figs dries well for me.
