What's the darkest dl you grow? (2 pics)

Mine is without a doubt, Jungle Beauty. This dl looks black in the morning and deep deep purple in late afternoon. I grow Black Briar Bay, Midnight Love, Dominick, and Ed Murray, but this one has them all beat.

Here's two photos of it. The second is taken with Big Smile, it's neighbor, in it for contrast.

Yes folks, it's really that black! :)

OMG thats awesome, sure wish he was growing in my garden. Where did you get it? I only have one dark one Voodoo Dancer.

Dot, I've grown it for years and haven't a clue where I origianally got it! :) It's a mid-late bloomer though, and blooms for a long period of time. It only started blooming on the 10th.
I like your Voodoo Dancer too. I don't grow that one. Here's a photo of my Midnight Love which is a really dark one also.

It is a home-made greenhouse - wood structure, polycarbonate sides and roof (the sort that has the double walls with channels), one solid wall, and vinyl doors. It is 22x12'. Initially, we built two greenhouses under one roof: a 16x12' warm house for my tropicals and for forcing and a 12x6' cold house for bulbs, delicate bonsai, etc. The cold house had major humidity problems, however, so we removed the interior wall. It does look a little goofy, because the front now has two patio doors, but it works far better - and in summer, the two doors really help cool things down. I do heat it, with natural gas heat (you can see that ugly pipe going up the wall in the second photograph). Some years, I use 45F for a minimum, some years 50F. I am in Oregon, zone 8. In general, our climate is extremely humid (probably very similar to yours in west Washington), which means I have to grow fairly dry or risk a lot of rot. At 45F, I have at times had to wait several weeks to water the entire house. But I do not like to use a higher minimum temperature: when we get those nasty spells of very cold air we occasionally get, I have to supplement with one or two electric heaters. If I grow much warmer than 45-50F minimum, I risk a steep drop in nighttime temperatures that, combined with the high humidity most greenhouses tend to have, can quickly wipe out a lot of plants. In summer, I evacuate most of the plants to outdoor, but I have kept the amaryllis indoor (with shade cloth protection over the roof) to protect them from damage by wildlife. Until now, that is. I have read so many on this forum speak of the benefits of summering the plants outdoor, I will try at least some this spring.

There are about 20 DLs in this new bed, not including the new ones in the second pic. I'm giving away 3 that I have more than one of to my sister. (Happy Returns, Prairie Blue Eyes, and Strawberry Candy. I'll probably also give her Blackberry Candy just because I'm not crazy about how it looks.) That gives me 4 more places for my new ones being delivered in Sept. If I'm really strapped for space I'll give her or my mom one of my Joan Seniors. But I live Joan Sr. - such a great bloomer and still going. Like most newbies, I ordered some I shouldn't have (too similar to another one I ordered, etc...) so I'm learning the hard way. Once everything blooms next year I'll know better what colors/shades, etc.. I have too much of and what I'm lacking.

Beautiful dl's and photos.... I always order from Maryott's and have them shipped in the late fall. It's not unusual for me to have blooms in Nov. and Dec. on the dl's I get from them. In fact, I had blooms on Victorian Lace and Dilemma last Nov. and set pods on VL from which I now have 12 seedlings up and growing! Oh, and the spider in your photo is probably a garden spider as black widows usually live in dark, damp places and do not build webs out in the open, but you should check it to make sure. Jan

Wow Fairysoapgirl for that price who cares who the hybridizer is? Ya'll just make me drool everytime you post your pictures. Pink is my very favorite color but with these daylilies a favorite is very hard to choose. I have finally been adopted and someone is going to share some of their lovely babies with me.Yipppppeeeeee! Maybe next year someone will be drooling over the daylilies I have and then I can adopt a couple of people too. That's what I love about irises and daylilies. If you like them you go way overboard in getting everyone of them you can put your hands on. A local chapter of the American Iris Society is having a Iris and Daylily sale the first week in October. Can anyone tell me what the usual prices are at these things? What would you normally expect to have to pay for a daylily at one of these sales? Someone told me before that sometimes these sales are crazy and if you don't get there early everything will be GONE. This will be my very first sale to attend. Do I need to take a baseball bat with me for protection? Fairysoapgirl will you email me and tell me more about your label maker the size, tape it takes and the cost? Shoot, you can just post it here if you want to. As soon as I get the daylilies in the mail from the person who adopted me I'll start making a wish list. Then I'll see what I can find at the sale. Shoot I may take my laptop with me so I can search and see what they look like before I purchase any. I finally decided to give up on posting the pictures of the two daylilies I had. I thought about the blonde joke about them making corrections on the screen with whiteout. I was seriously thinking about clipping some pictures out and sticking them to my monitor. Oh my goodness, Jan.That is really beautiful.Wish it was in MY garden :) The only dark one I have is STRUTTER'S BALL and its no where close to this beauty.JUNGLE BEAUTY is amazing.

I love the dark colored daylilies. I'm going to have to find that one and use it to cross with some other darks. I have a few, and one I'm waiting to see bloom for the first time, Quote The Raven, to see how dark that one is. When it blooms, I'll definitely post a pic.

Wow...I had read that Jungle Beauty was one of the darkest around. It looks black as black gets in that photo! So does Caribbean Frank League.

I got Black Stockings this year. I wonder how dark it will be?

My darkest one is Serena Dark horse. It's a very dark red but not nearly as dark as the ones listed above so I won't bother with the picture. Does anyone grow Smith Brothers? any other Blacks?

I have seen other pics of Jungle Beauty, and wondered if it was really that black. Now, I know for sure it is, and I would really like to have it. It is a novel color, and sure would be pretty surrounded by really bright colors for the effect. Jan G.

Jungle Beauty is incredible! Love the lime green throat & I can see the purple hue in the picture. I want that one!

I've been on a mission to get these dark ones & Caribbean Frank League is on it! I am so happy to see a pic of it!

One of the prettiest pairings (to my eyes at least) in season is the almost black pansy and the orange pansy around Halloween. If you could just get this to bloom in Mid October-November (the orange daylily would be an easy color to pair it with) what a wowzer that would be. I'm impressed and depressed all at the same time by that color.

Glad to see these pics. I put in a black and white bed this spring, no pics yet. The blacks I put in so far were Cinderella's Dark Side, Brookwood Black Kitten, Buckyballs, Caribbean Frank League, Smoking Gun and Bamboo Blackie. I plan on getting Jungle Beauty (and now I know I will purchase a clump on JB.) Also putting in Smith Brothers, Night Wings and Midnight Magic. Need at least 2 more dark ones to go with the white ones I have. Cindy

I don't have any of the really dark, dark red black ones. I would say off hand that my darkest daylily is Paul Owens intro POSSESSION OF OBSESSION.

A great thread. I'll just add a few darks I grow that haven't been listed yet. Sorry I don't have pics. Hermatige Newton gets very dark here. Salieri is stunning, and the oldie Starling along with Chicago Blackout are quite dark. Cheers, lloyd

I have Evening Enchantment & Bela Lugosi that have already been mentioned. I have Black Plush, but apparently I don't have a picture. This year it looks especially dark, but something has been chewing on it so I haven't gotten a pic. Also have Tuscawilla Blackout

Beautiful pictures everyone! I think out of these Jungle Beauty is my favorite. I almost bought it last year. Not sure why I didn't. I think it goes back on my list now.

Dot, Calloways had Jungle Beauty last year. I think I saw it at either the Plano or Mesquite location. I think there is also a Calloways in the Ft. Worth area if I am not mistaken. Might be worth giving them a call to see if they have it this year.

I grow Bela Lugosi, Evening enchantment, Jungle beauty( I just got last fall), Smith Bros( Just recieved in trade this spring),an oldie called Black Ruffles and a few dark noids. The darkest that has bloomed so far is the noid. although Black Ruffles has a deeper black Eyezone. I also just got Brer Rabbit's baby this spring too. Can't wait to see blooms on the new stuff.

What a fun thread. Thank you for sharing your pictures. They make me all the more anxious to see bloom season.

From buying a display garden I have a lot of new to me daylilies in many colors including a nice collection of the blacks... that I've yet to see with my own eyes. I'm really excited to see them bloom this year.

Honestly, I'm not even sure what all I have but here are some of the blacks from a very outdated inventory (2001)-some I've verified still growing, some not found yet, others are not on the list because they were added after the last inventory was taken- that I'm looking forward to seeing this bloom season. I only have one and it's really not dark compared to a lot of you guys' flowers, but it is darker than the picture shows. I've had this NOID for many years and really want to dig it up because I'm not that fond of it, just haven't done it yet.

I really like your ED MURRAY, Jan, and floota's DAKAR.

Nice pictures and variety! Glad you brought this up, there was a thread last fall and I mentioned my lone dark variety but couldn't find my pics. Came across the CD a few days back and was going to post anyway...This one looks much darker from a distance (as I'll assume many of the posted varieties do). Nice masculine daylily with hearty foliage and stout scapes with medium-large flowers. The bottom pic reveals it's shady location with the scapes seeking sun, thinking I'll move a division to a sunny spot this fall to compare color/retention. Trying Night Beacon this season, no idea how dark it'll turn out to be?

Wow... these are some seriously dark daylilies!! I don't have any this dark, but have seen them in others gardens, and you really have to see them in person to get the velvety texture they have. Much better in person. I liked looking at all these.

Does anyone know where I can find Jungle Beauty in Canada? I really want it, but every Canadian grower website I checked didn't have it listed. Gah! All I have right now is Bela Lugosi...I just moved into my place late last summer and now I have the fun task of filling up the enormous flower bed!!!

Creature of the Night is the darkest one that has bloomed for me so far but I have Mary's Baby and Ashwood Still Night which are darker.

I have Smith Brothers, Ava Lou, and a seedling of mine. I'm not as fond of the dark ones as I am bright!
