Video - Valley Fig Growers, Utica & Pleached fig

I just located a recently posted video on You Tube titled 'Valley Fig Growers-A Tradition of Quality.' It is a very good promotional 12 minute film that primarily shows the commercial fig production cycle in California. It features Blue Ribbon Orchards. The film includes some brief early fig history, briefly covers a few commercial fig varieties, final products, health benefits, etc. I highly recommend seeing this. There are two separate films due to the length.

Next are two fig videos from Utica, NY. One is titled ' Mohawk Valley Living#116 East Utica: Fig Tree' and the other is called 'Mohawk Valley Living #131 Fig Tree Grows in East Utica.' Nice story about local ethnic fig trees, people & winter protection. There are two separate videos from this local program.

The last video I found on You Tube is titled 'Pleach a Fig Tree' from the Dave Wilson nursery. It shows a fig tree that is braided together or 'pleached.'

Just by watching the first clip...simply quite amazing!

What an excellent thread. Thanks to everyone who has been here before me. Gophers rule here, so my artichokes are planted in raised (really really raised at 2' off the ground) beds with gopher wire on the ground under the whole bed. For me the whole point of growing my own artichokes is to get them when they are young and small and I can steam 3-4 of them for myself....yum. Here are my questions: In my Zone 8b, should I cut the whole plant all the way to the ground about now, or just the old blooming stalks? I just went out today and pulled out all of the dead and dying leaves from the outside and there are still a lot of healthy primary plants or crowns in there. Clearly this bed is overcrowded. Should I try to dig the whole (please please please say "no") plants out and reduce them in size, or can I just take the pups off of the outside (oh that would be sooooooo much easier). Any help would be appreciated. Susan

I'm addicted ! i have a very small backyard so most of my trees are in large pots , some for 3 years . I live in Gold Canyon (east valley (most are 2-3 years old already and many are fruiting ) here is what I have : Anna Apple orange li jujube pinapple guava 5 ice cream banana trees pomegranite blackberry bush Pink guava white sapote Glenn mango coconut mango loquat acerola bush lemon elderberry bush moringa mexicola avacado Addicted ! Maybe. Maybe not, Steve. Bees travel many miles. Are your chances better my selecting a seed from a block of same species trees? Yes. Is it perfect science? No. You still have a chance of having a hybrid. As I mentioned in my previous post, peaches, apricots and nectarine seedlings as hybrids will often be very good. And, sometimes better than either parent. Unlike other fruit trees (pomes for example, and monoembryonic citrus), whose hybrids are often less spectacular than their parents. And all three will produce strong seedlings, that can grow very quickly. Now, the downside to any seedling will be its roots. If you have unusual soil issues, this can be a detractor, as you do not gain the benefit of a stronger, better rootstock, more suited to your specific soil issues (if you have them). But, they are still fun to grow from seed. If you do not have specific soil issues (heavy clay, poorly draining, sandy, nematodes, pathogens, etc.), then seedling stone fruits are fun to experiment with, as they will produce very quickly, as opposed to citrus seedlings. Anyone Growing Peaches in the far north??

Peaches were great this year. The spring was long and cold and the end of summer was dry, for me. I have one tree with peach bore. I will probably remove that tree. All the peach trees set fruit so I was eating peaches a long time this summer. The nectarine tree set two fruit and the japanese beetles ate so much of them I threw them away. I need to start training the trees to the stakes I will be tying them to. It looks like a long fall for me here so I will have a lot of time to do all this. Just hope I can find some cheap cover hay this year. I will spray more for the beetles next year as I think we will be overwhelmed with them. I tried to take picture of the covering process but the trees were small and it was hard to see the procedure. Maybe this year (if I think of it) I'll try to take pictures again.

I couldn't braid my three, 1-inch diameter trees together, so, after planting all three together, in one container, with the individual trunks as close together as possible, I fastened all the trunks together with stainless-steel screws. I would imagine that in order to braid tree trunks, they would have to be still quite green, so that they could bend without breaking. I tried bending a 3/4 inch dia. fig tree stem, and, it cracked. So now, I just screw trunks and branches together, to "make" the tree that I want. BY the way, my "composite-trunk" fig trees are doing quite well, and some of the screwheads are almost hidden by the new bark.

There's and old thread re: "Fuse-Grafting" that can be checked out for more information. Also, google: "Arbosculpture" and see what can be done with woody, plant material, time, and plenty of imagination. I was amazed! Enjoy, all. Frank DV
