Marseilles VS and the Abducted Fig

First, Herman, I have now tasted two of your MVS figs; they are without doubt the sweetest figs I have eaten. Someone or something else is eating them too. There were six on my little tree and I only got two of them.

The Abducted Fig:

I had one lonely little Negronne that I managed to keep from three cuttings given me. (I had given one to a friend) It was a nice little tree, about eighteen inches tall and growing well. Yesterday it was gone, just not there any more. Pot and all. Now I do not know if there is a fig thief about or if there is some other explanation. I cannot find anything else missing, just my Negronne.

My eight year old grandsons immediately came under suspicion. I wonder if one of them ran over it with their scooter and hid the evidence? Time will tell; I will search the creek edges this morning.

LOL; my own misspent youth flashes before me. I once shot one of my mama's hens with my BB gun. I never expected to hit her, but I got her right above the eye and she flopped dead before me. That was an ugly scene. My mama liked her hens and I was lucky that she liked me a little bit more.

OX:The Marseilles vs blk,is not the sweetest fig overall.
There are probably many figs ,just as sweet or sweeter,But:
In our cold climate,zone 6-7:
Marseilles vs black,will ripe despite lack of heat, While other cultivars will not ripe completelly,and that is why this one seems so sweet.
For our climatic conditions,far from Ideal for fig,yes,I have still to find another one.
But I am Looking!!!!!!,and maybe one day I will have one even better.
Till then,this cultivar is my base,producer,that every year bad or good,give my Family a good amount of fruits for fresh eating and Fig Jam.
My granddoughter loves fig fruits and fig Jam.

I can't tell you if your Marseilles will ripe in your Climate,but I can tell you for sure that if you had a Sal's(Gene strain), Hardy Chicago,Maryland Brn Trkey,or Marseilles vs Black,you would reliabelly get ripe fruits Just like i do here in New Jersey. It is all about,what kind of fig you start with,to make it more simple. Best Regards

Hi Maryann:It does look similar. These are some points,you should know is the same or not. It got the closest eye out of most figs I had before. The figs are spicy,and excellent tasting. I remember even the first one was super tasting. It could be.Sometime the first one is usually poor tasting on many figs. See if the next figs you harvest from Round Hill are supergood tasting with closed eye. Also another way to ID is:When other cultivars sour in the rain,this one will not,ever. Best Regards H2

This reinforces my theory that there are 2 different figs named Desert King in the US. My DK is planted in ground and has similar fruits as shown in an Herman's previous post http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fig/msg072043541873.html While the recent post describing the Gillette rescue, (along with Desert King), is showing a fruit that looks different from the inside in color (darker). And this is not the first time that I see Desert King pictures showing such differently colored fruits.. The link to the Gillette post: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fig/msg1214390014100.html?13 Size and weight seems different as well.. the DK I have has some fruits reaching 60 grams, but usually they are around 40-45 grams or less, and Condit was talking about an average of more than 80 grams... Finally, even if I have only been able to observe DK with fruits for the last 3 years, and although I live in a very humid region, the DK has resisted pretty well so far and needs quite a lot of rain before starting to sour, like any normal fig would...
