Without a doubt, they are killing the fruit bushes where I live. I went out and pulled at least a black garbage bag full yesterday and there are many more. Much of the bush that was alive last year, is not this year. You can pull some of them out but where the bush is still full, it is hard to get to all of them. Also, even though you are pulling them out, there are still little vines that you can't get to that are probably strangling them. One section about a foot long and maybe wo inches wide is completely dead now and that is where these air plants were very thick. Very sad.

Don't plant it within 100 feet of anything you care about. It's not invasive, but they're extremely brittle. One across the street came down in a mild March thunderstorm - not a hurricane - a couple years ago, crushing my boyfriend's car. The storm snapped it off at 10 feet above the ground. The ten-foot stump finally came down in a thunderstorm a few months ago, taking out a neighbor's fence. (these were planted in the right-of-way and the whole neighborhood had to beg the city to take its twin out.) They also tend to get kind of scraggly looking as they get taller. They don't keep that pretty conical shape down here. And because they get so tall, taking one out can require a tree guy with a cherry picker to top it several times in order to get rid of it without endangering nearby houses (had to do that in another house years ago, it's expensive.) I'd advise against anyone down here planting them. I know Geico would.

In the early 2000's I got to go to Big Pine Key (Fla. Keys) with a freind of mine, and I saw a few NIP's growing quite impressively near my friends RV, they grow thin but tall when in ground in the semi-tropics, well, Maybe I should say "tropics" because down in the Fla Keys it doesn't usually get any colder than about 55-65 F in the worst of winter. But, anyhow, the Norfolk IS. Pines will grow much different when in the ground and a place where they won't be damaged by cold temps. Potted NIP's indoors will have the needles pretty much hanging downwards, but, when grown in the ground in a pretty warm area, the branches have needled growth that sticks upward, it is such a different form of growth, but, I assume that the upper growing foliage is likley the best way for the tree to grow. It's just so strange when you see the difference in the trees growth form, but, yes, you can grow the NIP indoors in winter, but, unless you get it used to more sun gradually, you could sun scald your NIP tree. They are usually all over the place in winter, Wal-Mart has them everywhere every winter, unless they have decided to not put many of them on display, maybe they are not as plenty-ful now? But, I know that many houseplants have a hard time living indoors all winter. I have tried and failed to keep NIP's happy for several winters in my home, but, maybe someone out there will be able to supply enough sun and moisture for their potted NIP. Good luck guys.
