African spider lily - Crinum augustum question

I've admired these huge plants and just bought one in a two gallon pot. I thought they were drought tolerant but I'm reading various places they are swamp lilies and need lots of water. Since I don't have a watering system and we are gone all summer, I'm not sure what to do about planting it.

Anyone have any experience with what growing conditions these plants can tolerate? I know it's likely to get hit by a frost but a neighbor on our street has a plant in her front yard. Leaves are hit and need cut off after it's been below freezing but it always seems to return nicely.

Thanks.

Marcia
