The Vista is smaller, actually similar in size to Negronne. I have been eating all these other figs which ripened earlier, and was excited about them, but when the Vista finally started getting ripe, I realized that I had forgotten what a truly good tasting, superior fig it is. I have also been learning how very different they are in their ripening habits. Burnswick goes from no sign of getting ripe to fuly ripe in 36-48 hours. Golden Celeste and Dark Portugese need 3-4 days to fully ripen, after the are colored up, and droopy, much like a Celeste. The biggest surprises this year were what a nice rich flavored fig Danny's Delite was and how very sweet and delightful Galbun was (a very light green fig). Trojano is a nice flavored, sweet fig, and my Igo (which I am not absolutely sure really is Igo - long story) is also a rich, sweet fig. The last interesting fig was Falls Gold, which is a very agressive grower, and has a nice full, kind of nutty flavor, but if you let it get fully ripe, is so sweet that it will explode your head. The sweetness keeps building like the hotness in Jalapeno peppers.

Jon: How old is your tree, and how many fruit have you gotten from it? Elder: I grow fig trees because I like figs, primarily. They require no input of chemicals (thank the Lord), and they're generally trouble free. I prune them to my space limitations, and, so I don't have to use an extension ladder to pick fruit. I've grown a few precocious trees that in their first year, from a cutting, provided a few figs. I've grown others that provided a fair crop in their second year; and I've grown plenty that gave a very nice crop in their third year. DD has done none of the above, but I intend to give it one more chance. Although I have an Italian friend from the old country, nearby, who says he has figs that didn't bear 'til their 7th year, I tell him, Goodonya--but I can't wait that long. Why should I go figless for 7 years, when I have trees that will produce in 2 years? It would have to be the most wonderful fig in the world. Although Jon got a few figs in zone 10, that doesn't do much for me, here, in my zone 7 area, at the completion of DDs third year, pretty much figless. (My two brebas were fair.) Is it like waiting for a Century Plant to bloom? I hope not; I'm getting a little long in the tooth. There's a lot to be said for a fig tree that's a prolific producer.

Elder, This was avery different year. Last year DD was red interior and was to die for (main crop). This year it is blond, and yucky, and most figs dropped. It is not the only awesome fig to be yucky or problematic this year. Something different about the weather this year.
