Who's your best performer?

OK, so I have been watching in amazement as the Clown Parade has gone on and on for what seems like forever. :D It is too bad I'm not doing pink in this garden, or I'd have already ordered a dozen of those!

I wonder, what are some other great performers like CP? Those that have multiple blooms, or bloom for a very long time. Post 'em if you got 'em! Thanks!

I consider Last Snowflake to be my best performer. It seems to bloom forever and reblooms late when nothing else is blooming. I have posted the pictures in my posts.

This is a question we usually answer at the end of the season. Some people's seasons have not even started, so they can't do a thorough job answering now. Do a search on "best performers" and you will get our thread from last year.

Sorry to be away for a bit and get behind on the discussion. I'm so glad there are so many Bonica fans out there! I sometimes feel it doesn't get as much respect as deserved, since it's not flashy enough to get attention as a modern, and too new to be technically an OGR (though I agree Ingrid that it fits quite well among the OGRs with its lovely open style). Catspa - the reason mine doesn't keel over from the blooms is the handy fence that ended up next to this bush - not remotely planned of course, since Bonica considerably preceded the fence, but still a very handy thing. Malorena and Mariannese - your pictures are a great testament to why we love this rose, and anything that can tempt a non-gardener to take photos of a rose is something to be proud of (and of course, your daughter is a source of joy and pride in herself). Mariannese, I agree that it was sweet as well as a terrific opportunity to meet a keeper of the Meilland tradition and complement a rose that has more than stood the test of time. I agree with your sentiments and I'm glad you got the chance to share them (did he agree?). Kes - my Elizabeth of Goshen gets no more than 3 feet or maybe 3.5 feet in a season, but undoubtedly she'd be a bit taller with more sun or a longer growing season. Even during last summer's explosion of blooms with all that surviving cane, I don't remember her getting particularly large. As for problems, the main disease in my part of the world is blackspot, and we don't get it anything like as bad as you do on the East coast, since we tend to be dry here in the Plains. Even during our heavy rains in the last few months this fall, plenty of other plants started to blackspot quite a bit and I don't remember EofG being particularly bothered. That doesn't mean she wouldn't in your zone - witness the difference in Austin rose health between our zones - but I think she has a better chance than the average Austin at doing well for you. No guarantees of course, but I'm glad you have the chance to try and I suspect it'll do nicely for you. And bellegallica, there's nothing remotely to hesitate about for your plans for those pink and orange schemes. Nothing 60's about it - Marie Daly is such an understated pink that she needs a few gaudy marigolds to wake her up a bit. Put a few purple salvias to tie them together and you have a photo opportunity waiting to happen, not to mention bee paradise. Go ahead - do it and post us some pictures! Cynthia

What is your best performing paniculata hydrangea this year?

HI Ostrich - Passing " best performing" judgment on the 7 H paniculatas in my piece of soil is not easy, as it is tantamount to comparing them unfairly Â age, inherent habits, bloom /foliage, production/size/color, over-all Âpleaser-effectÂ (which are in the eyes of the beholder), etc make choosing one over another difficult! Because IÂm partial to daintier/airier blossoms, it makes Princess Kyu a favored choice, hands down, but she is a tree-form! Among the bushes, QF in her 2nd yr met a # of my personal criteria Â beautiful form & not one moment, winced under true f/s exposure! Tardivas, are consistently, great & early performers, have grown very large as predicted in their 4th season! PD held her own Â stature as well as, tons of beautiful blossoms (1st season in ground, technically - was over-wintered outdoors in pot). I donÂt count AB as she is a true 1st season & as we all know, loaded with bloom-boosting-hormones by growers. LL's 3rd season, got the ÂWow-effectÂ/quite a bloom performer & breathtaking during his early-bloom-stages but failed in my over all performance criteria! Â:( All are now in their different shades of pink stages! Sorry, I guess I complicated "best performing .... this year" with my criteria!

Thinking of another fragrant one to sub for Holy Mole, I imagine that Stained Glass would be sure to hold its edge....which is not really wide, but then the center is what is wide. It could fade some of the gold, but it is still a good looking plant. Then one that is tough as nails and similar in COLOR to Stained Glass is Dick Ward. Same sort of variegation, light center and dark margins. But not fragrant. Are you looking for a medium-large sort of hosta? or a large? I see that Alex Summers with a dark center and a gold margin is a smooth and well organized hosta. But so is Satisfaction. And the older one of my Satisfactions has a very tough leaf. I got it in 2010, it was my NOID. The new Satisfaction which came this year has not developed the substance the other one has. So if you do not have a Satisfaction, take a look at a mature one and see if it does what you want by your front steps. If the first thing your visitors say is WHAT IS THAT PLANT OUT THERE? you know you made the right choice. :)

Actually the Minneola Tangelo aka Honeybell is only one kind of Tangelo. There is also the well known Orlando Tangelo as well as many other lesser known ones. The origin of the name comes the combination of the words Tangerine & Pom"ELO". Both the Minneola & the Orlando are named after cities in the Citrus capital of the free world - Florida where they originated. Most of the common traditional citrus (and Mango) varieties all originated from breeding programs in the great state of Florida. I was just wondering if there were some you remember from last year.

Dot, I love Last Snowflake! Good to know that it performs well along with being gorgeous! I have seen your photos and really like it a lot.

A little dip, Pixie Plaything - going and going and going.

But, there are plenty in the garden - West Coast Blues comes to mind, always in bloom, always perfect.

SC. Surprise Purple is always blooming and the form is always good, the problem is the color - always splotchy until rebloom. I am trying to cross it with some some others that have color stability. We'll see....

Heaven's Declaring - favorite face and always blooming - sent up instant rebloom scapes and is now sending up more rebloom scapes.

Crystal Sea - always blooming, rebloom and perfect flowers.

Velvet Eyes - bloom, bloom, bloom, bloom, bloom..... whew.

Missouri Memories - Perfect flowers every time and lots of them

Very Berry Ice - Same as above

Neusa Gergemann - beautiful dip that blooms over and over

Pink Rocks - great dip, great color, perfect blooms every time, and lots of them

If you like spiders, Easy Ned, a tall, hearty spider with yellow blossoms, blooms for a very long time and has literally dozens of blossoms on every scape. It is an excellent performer in my garden. So is Awesome Blossom. This year my clump has more than 100 blossoms on 4 fans.

Thanks fairysoapgirl and Lainey! I looked up each of these and found several I really like to add to my ever-growing list. :) Funny, Easy Ned was one of the first ones I was attracted to and I came SO close to ordering it, but didn't! Now I think I should have!

I just got Easy Ned after having it on my wish list for some time! Hope mine does as well as yours. I have Awesome blossom, someone sent it to me last year, I can't remember if they didn't like the look or it wasn't performing well. It has multiplied quite well here, but it ain't gonna bloom this year. I'm not sure why, it looks quite healthy.
Longstocking has been blooming heavily & isn't showing signs of letting up really. Wisest of Wizards has done really well for me, multiplied well & bloomed & bloomed last year & seems to be repeating its performance this year. Blueberry candy was new last year, but is covered in blooms.
