I've got lots of brebas on my older fig (probably Brown Turkey) and main crop figs starting on both. The brebas are about the size of a small hen's egg now, and I've tipped every breba-bearing branch I can reach, even if it's not up to the 6" mark (of new growth). I'll report on whether that seems to reduce the drop rate on brebas. (Already lost a dozen or more at the marble size or below, but I figure that's just routine thinning, given how many there were.) Can anyone recommend a good site for me to learn about fig pruning? My trees are both getting out of hand, literally (after years of sulking, in the case of the older plant). Robin

Would you post a pic of your breba crop actually on the old growth on the tree? I would like to compare it to my Kadota. I've been growing several old farm trees that I have always suspected to be Kadotas. This year (4 years later)I am finally getting some nice looking figs on the old growth. They are the only figs that I'm growing that have a breba crop.

I'm not sure if you're likely to see them except in these very warm winters, from what I've seen and heard. No matter how many brebas form in the fall, only a very mild winter will allow them to overwinter successfully; I don't see it happening on older trees any more than younger ones but will start keeping better tabs on this. I don't think we've been seeing these kinds of winters with any great frequency in the past; time will tell if they happen more regularly in the future. The winter prior to this one the temperature was in the low single digits, and that is more typical for the overall climate. I had some breba fruit on several of my young (2-3 years old) trees this year and found it to be less than exceptional compared to the main crop fruit I've been getting, for whatever it's worth. It may be variety dependent to some extent.

My darkest skin / reddest flesh is petite negri. they have it at raintreenursery.com in WA about 100 miles from mportland (Im not sure the distance) and you can get it mail order. It is slow to grow; mine in Vancouver across the river from you is 5 years old and a 6 feet tall, about 6 feet across at the crown as well. I just ate the last breba but it is loaded with main crop.
