Do you know your fig variety names?
A famous fig that is known as a 1 cropper it the Celeste.
Most figs do produce 2 crops; breba on last year wood,
and main-crop on current green wood. One possibility
for lack of breba-fruit is that the fruit buds were
winter killed...how did you winterize your figs?

hi goerge.I have read alot on this forum and I know you are one of the fig kings.
I have a katoda, dessert king, peters h, HC, and celeste. I wrap the containers and tree in burlap and store in my shed. I had zero die back on my trees this year. This is my first year with putting some in the ground and I havnt figured out how I am going to wrap them yet. probably a tomato cage stuffed with leaves wraped in roofing paper and burlap. I built a small greenhouse this spring which I plan on using in very early spring next year. I was hoping that the greenhouse(with heater) will give me a head start on the season. If the main crop grows on the new wood should I prune the containerized trees heavily in the fall? I want to try to keep them somewhat small so they are easy to store in winter. Do you cut your trees back to the main trunk each year? How much do you take off? If I dont prune the tree will get bigger and bigger each year. So ideally ,I want as much new growth as possibly each year to help with fig production? I hope that you understand what im trying to say. thanks , Robert

When my Celeste was putting out two crops, the most I got was 4 figs. This year I was going to remove the breba crop but I didn't get any like the two previous springs. If you get a breba crop, you may be better off removing the figlets. This will help start the main crop cycle earlier and allow the main crop to ripen (if you have a short season). This is only theory cause my figs are not ripe yet. I'm hopeful this year!

I leaned my tree over and wrapped it with black flooring paper. Then I wrapped the blanket over the black paper. Held it down with a large plywood I had in the house. Covered it with bags(full of leaves)from the neighborhood for a thick cushion. I had no dieback. I left my Alma uncovered outside through the winter to see if it could survive on its' own, and it didn't make it. Oh well, 1 out of 2 isn't bad! : )
