I've seen rooting like that above the soil line with my issai kiwi cuttings also. If you gently tug on the cutting and feel any resistance you likely have roots below also. If there are no roots below you could take it out and repot it carefully so that root is in potting mix. That root is pretty small and fragile though you might want to let it grow a bit before trying that. As for when to expose them to dry air do it gradually. you will have to use something different than the jar to do that. Maybe a clear plastic bag tied tightly then each day or 2 open it a bit to get it acclimated to dryer air. Good luck! Tyler

I have a few more pics to share of this wierdo. After playing with figs for a couple of years, I must say, the only thing that is not very fig like on this is the leaf bud, most buds are less round and more triangular, but the leaf and shoot is verbatim what I'm seeing from my Carolina Dark and Negronne varieties which are breaking now, and the structure of the stalk (cambium, center, joints, bark, milk, etc.) is precisely the same as ficus carica, and so is with the leaf veins and general leaf shape, texture, smell, everything. Even the shape of the teeny tiny leaf as you see pictured here is correct. Anyway, here are some pictures of the cutting, the odd leaf bud prior to bursting, and a little teeny tiny leaf. I will take some more pictures in a few days when the leaf gets larger. All of them decided that they would break buds before rootlets except the one pictured, but I have some huge whip suckers I've started as well.

Peg, I would pot the rooted cutting now if the roots are at least 3/4". Don't worry about the roots showing outside the vermiculite as long as the cutting is right-side up. I would get pre-moistened potting soil (not to wet) that has been fluffed in a bucket and put some in the bottom of a pot, put in the cutting and crumble soil on it and cover with plastic letting it breath a couple hours day.. Do not water it by pouring water on it. I drizzle or water by misting with a spray bottle. I have found that using water like from a hose or watering with lots of water at once compresses the soil and causes rotting. I havent lost a cutting yet doing this. i'd open them a bit each day and watch closely for dropping. maybe give them shade. in SC i would think you have strong sun now during the day, and that wouldn't help matters. can you watch them during the day? maybe over the weekend?
