When to put in ground figs under cover.

I planted 2 in ground figs - a Celeste and Chicago Hardy.

Do I blanket them before the first hard frost or should I wait until it is routinely in the 20's?

When we get our first frost the temps go back up and didn't want to overheat them if temps go back into the 60's.

I'm in the Ohio Valley- Z6

you're waiting for the plant itself to gointo dormancy and for the temperatures to drop into the high 20's/30 at night. For me (also in zone 6) it works out to be after Thanksgiving but before Christmas.

How big are the plants? Also, you should not be fertilizing much more this summer. You don't want to encourage any more new growth, as you want this summer's new growth to have sufficient time to harden off before cold and dormancy sets in.

near ann arbor MI .. my straws.. have been evergreen all winter.. they dont care about frost or freeze.. IF THEY ARE DORMANT ... and you didnt say how active they are in the pot ... i gotta think.. in z7.. they ought to go in the ground ... but more facts please ken

Sets are very small bulbs that can be planted as soon as the ground dries out enough to be workable. Like right now in zone 5. You can find them in any garden center or farm supply place, either white, red or yellow. I plant them about an inch apart and pull alternate ones for green onions as soon as they are big enough to use. The rest will turn into regular onions and can be pulled during the summer or stored for winter use.

Hire a teenager to dig it out :-) . Grass grows from the root crown, so it's likely to come back otherwise. Also, loose soil makes it easier for the groundcover to root & spread.

Lamium is nice---you can just mow it if it spreads too far out of bounds. Lots of people like ajuga but we found it really does take over the lawn. I have also had good luck with violets---either the plain purple kind or the white, but there are also many other varities and colors. My favorite shade ground cover is sweet wooodruff---lovely foliage, little white starry flowers, and a wonderful smell when it is dried.
