Dad and Daylily Connectiuons

This morning, on Fathers' Day, as I walked through my garden, so many of the daylilies reminded me of my own father, who passed away more than six years ago.

MAGNIFICENT DAD was looking truly magnificent - more colorful than its ffo, and with a more ornate edge. Happy Fathers' Day, Dad!

ICE CREAM EMPEROR would be a good title for my dad, as well as this daylily. He was always up for a trip to an ice cream shop. And no matter how many flavors there were, he always ordered vanilla for himself, preferably golden vanilla.

LEXINGTON LACE - This one seemed all about Dad, too. A Kentucky native, he loved to go "down home." He was a lifelong fan of University of Kentucky basketball in Lexington, Ky.

I saw some daylilies with names of some of his favorite expressions.

HOLD YOUR HORSES - That's one I heard a lot when I was young.

FAIR TO MIDDLIN' - When I'd ask him how he was, that was always his reply.

LAST SNOWFLAKE made me think of how much fun we had in the snow - whether building snowmen or going sledding.

HALLOWEEN TRICK reminded me of all the times he took me Trick or Treating when I was little

AWESOME CANDY brought back memories of Dad surprising us with candy bars from the drug store.

ELEGANT CANDY had me recalling pretty heart-shaped boxes of candy Dad always got us for Valentines Day.

BLAZING SADDLES symbolized my father's love for TV and movie westerns.

A LTTLE FIRE SCARECROW was what the Wicked Witch of the West said during one of the scarier parts of The Wizard of Oz. I was always glad my Dad was in the room when we got to that part of the move.

HILLBILLY HEART - While I had a Rock-n-Roll heart, my father's was purely hillbilly. On the road in HIS car, it was always country music.

DIVINELY BLESSED - I was divinely blessed to have a Dad like him.

I REMEMBER You, Dad!

How quickly the seasons turned and the time passed by.

HEAVEN'S DECLARING opened today. Just a little somethin' for Dad and me.

Beautiful pictures and I love the way you told us of the memories of your dad. My own dad passed away when I was jusat starting to be a teenager so it was a long, long time ago. But I think of him often as my parents started my love of gardening. My dad especially with his growing of roses, gladiolas and Dahlias.

I thought I'd update with a photo of my first blooms this season! My mom planted these in front of the house I now live in back in 1974... I sent some to her out in Washington State, though she hasn't had any blooms out there. What's even funnier to me is that my mom didn't recognize them! "I thought they were just plain orange!" Anyone have any idea on what species this might be and/or some helpful keywords to look it up on the big database? I can tell it's a double-lily (I think) and that's about as far as I get!

Shirley, I'm a Medical Technologist. Since most people have no idea of what that is, here is a short explaination. 4 years college, 1 year intership. I work in a hospital laboratory. We are the people who set up the blood for transfusions, microbiology (find out what bacteria you have), all the blood tests when you have your blood taken (hemoglobin, Blood sugars), urine tests, stool tests, sperm counts, Cerebral Spinal Fluid, any fluids from your body get tested by us. We also help draw blood, but please don't get us confused with the Phlebotomy team, they only draw blood for a living. I enjoy my job and the people probably because I work part-time. When the kids are done with school, then I will be full-time. Dawn, I grew Kong Mosiac Coleus from seed this year. It didn't do so well for me, probably since I had it in partial sun. Can't wait to hear more about the Lu'au. Well, today is our 22 wedding aniversary and hubby will be working very late. But we will celebrate this weekend. Also, I'm covered with poison Ivy. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how I got it. But then I put 2 and 2 together. Hubby and son were at the cottage for several days, so I let Ahi the cat sleep with me. HE is an outdoor/indoor cat. I bet he had it on his fur and the rest is history, or the rest is on me. The worst patch is on my neck where he loves to rub. I'm the biggest baby when it comes to Poison Ivy. I scratch and scratch. I'm trying really hard not to scratch my neck and face. (silent scream) Dawn, since you are into coleus, I thought you might get a kick out of a no-name coleus that did great for me. Pic is on the front porch. Grew this one from seed also. (Grow all of mine from seed). And since we need a Daylily picture, here is Knights in White Satin with tall red salvia and Rudbeckia gloriosa. This is KIWS last bloom. :o( And since I just have to post a picture of this Rudbeckia, I'm not sure what it is called. Took me all summer to fall in love with it. Now I will be sad to see it go. I had to come out of lurkdom to tell you that post was a great tribute to your dad. My dad left us 12 years ago and I still miss him very much. I enjoy reading posts and looking at everyone's pictures but I don't post very often. I had to comment about that.. My bloom season is about 3-4 weeks away. I see scapes coming up everywhere. I live in Nova Scotia.

Beautiful tribute to your Dad. Brought tears to my eyes as I thought about my own Dad. He passed away 12 years ago, but it feels like yesterday. I still miss him very much.

Debra, I think your tribute to your Dad was even more beautiful than the daylilies and I wouldn't have thought that was possible. I lost my dad almost 11 years ago so I was really moved by this. Every one of the daylilies is stunning.

Those are lovely and the tribute was too. I am missing my dad. I thought about him when I picked the blueberries, today. He loved to grab a handful off my bushes and eat them. and he would have been so psyched over my garden blooming like a fool this year.

It's never time to lose your dad. Thanks for the memories, Deborah.

Christine in Nova Scotia - I'm glad you came out of lurkdom. I think Father's Day and Christmas are when I miss my dad the most. I hope you will post more often. We're all one big family here.

I like them all and thinking of you notations on each flower makes me realize how much I missed. my dad was not a dad to be proud of and he certainly wasn't a Father. Count yourself blessed to have such wonderful memories.. Blazing Saddles is my choice....Ellie

I love all your daylilies and the way you told the story of your Dad with each of them.Sounds like you had a Dad to be proud of.Mine was not one to be proud of , but,I loved him.My mom and dad split when I was 9 years old, and I never seen him again...............I love that Purple daylily.Its gorgeous.

What a beautiful post! The captions with the daylilies made them even more beautiful, if that could be possible. I'm very blessed to still have my Dad with me. I don't know what I'll do without him. I was remembering my Grandpa today. I was his shadow growing up right next door. Miss him very much and wish my children could have known him.

Wonderful tribute to your Dad. I lost my Dad to cancer almost 11 years ago and a day hasn't gone by that I don't miss him. Your blooms are wonderful too.

Debra, what a beautiful post this was. It made me downright weepy. I had the best father in the world and miss him terribly, although he's been gone about six years now. Thanks for bringing to mind my own great memories.
