Some buds turned brown and shriveled up- Need advice

I noticed yesterday that on Black Eyed Stella and Raspberry Pixie that a couple of buds (not all) turned brown and shiveled.

Is this normal for new plantings (these have only been in the ground since early June) that some will open and others die off?

We've had rain (thunderstorms every afternoon)and I was afraid to water them anymore for fear of giving them too much water. Could they still need more?

Other possible reasons for some doing this?

Julia, Any time this has happened to my DL's, it has been because they need more water. There may be other causes...thrips, maybe too much water? Are the leaves starting to turn yellow on the tips? Stick your finger in the soil about 2 inches deep close to the affected daylily....and see if it feels dry. If it does, try increasing water.

The leaves that were cut back when they were shipped do turn a yellow/brown color at the ends but I thought that was just natural since they had been cut back.
If this isn't suppose to happen, please let me know.

Thanks for your help, everyone. I read an old post that said an amaryllis plant needs to send up at least 8 healthy leaves in order to flower the following year. The fellow I talked with said that he had never heard of such a thing. Do we know whether or not this is true? For example, can an amaryllis with only one, very tall leaf flower the following year? I'm glad I didn't cut off my plant with the shriveled bud! I guess that man thought I wanted only one bloom and then would throw away the plant, instead of understanding I wanted to preserve the bulb for future blooms. He said he'd never heard of nurturing the leaves through the summer for future blooms. I should add that it never actually sent up much of a scape. The shriveled bud is about 3" long, emerged from the top of the bulb, without the stalk/stem of the scape yet showing. The bud has some vertical brown streaks on one side. So it aborted early, before the stalk poked up, even. I wonder whether I could have overfertilized? I read that amaryllis likes soil a bit on the acid side so I diluted some African violet fertilizer 7-7-7 and poured it in the pot the amaryllis is in, after quite a bit of foliage had emerged, trying to be very careful not to get it on the bulb, just in the surrounding soil. These 2 plants with the more lush and longer leaves might have gotten more of the fertilizer-water than my others that have shorter leaves, although I wouldn't think so, but it is possible. Could that explain the brown streak on the bud and its shriveling? The leaves don't have any brown on them. The plant that has only several tall leaves of foliage is standing up by itself tonight. I had propped it against the bookcase, and when I move it, it no longer flops over. The one with the shriveled bud has 2 leaves which stand up on their own tonight, but 2 other leaves still need to be propped up, because they will flop without the support. If I did overfertilize and that caused the bud to shrivel, will that cause the bulb not to bloom next year, do you think? Does the Narcissus fly tend to cause the phenomenon of an amaryllis with only one leaf? I thought I read that somewhere in the forum, but I'm not sure?

Thank you very much for the advice .I do know that they are not pot plants but when i bought them they had already huge green shoots and it was too cold in the garden to leave them out .I live in United Kingdom Manchester which happen to be one of the most cold and wet areas of England .And it does rain a lot that is why i have to take out them if there is sun and get them in if it rains .Otherwise they will be flooded in a pod for sure .And yes i must admit i am very new to use fertilizer so i do not have yet clue which one for what aims is the best .Still learning tho i will try to save what i can and next year i will know what to do .Meanwhile my red lilium are outside i planted them yesterday unfortunately after that it started to rain and no sun so i do worry for them as well :(Weather here is not like in my country we have very cold winter and very warm spring and summer which is perfect for them .Here it can rain weeks and weeks . Just to add any kind of advices are welcome i spend ours to read the forums here and i do love them i learned a lot things for many of my plants .So i will able to care better for them .

I am not an expert by any means. I just know that when I transplanted mine the caudex got very slightly dentable. I just started watering through more often, I have very dry heat with a breeze so I tend splash water at it every other day, What was your routine before repotting it? Did you use sand before? If you put it right out in the sun after you transplanted it sunburn can be why the color change. I wait about a week before full sun. Transplanting it can be a shock Rick I wonder if this should have the roots thinned a little. Wouldn't it give them a better air circulation I think the lack of water may not be the problem but the frequency it gets water. High temps can really dry things out. Since the bottom roots got soft, does this pot have a catch dish under it? That could leave the roots in water to long. Instead of draining through.

Hi, Katiesg07 Given what I am seeing here I am afraid you are killing them with kindness. First seedlings do not need or want to be put in plastic bags. In fact daylily seedlings do much better if you water from the bottom and keep a fan blowing on them to keep the surface of the soil dry and blowing in the wind from the fan . From what I am seeing , I would say you have overwatered them . My recommendation would be to leave them alone for a while let the soil dry out a bit . At this point they may be so wet as to draw fungas gnats and believe me you dont want that . This does not look like damping off ( that usually kills the plant right at the soil surface) and it doesnt look like fungus gnat damage . The larva will eat the plant off at the soil surface . They need light but not hot sunlight so if you have a spot you can put them where there is high light ( real or artificial ) and get a fan blowing on them asap you may be able to rescue these as they dont look that far gone but you need to do it asap . Do not spray with any fungus spray . And keep your fingers crossed ! Not sure where you are located but I am in South Western Ontario Canada and I have just planted my seeds and my seedlings are sprouting as we speak outside. They are in a somewhat slightly shaded spot but still get lots of light . If Iwere you and you are able to put outside I would do so . Keep an eye on them in case they start to dry out too much but you may find once you stop futzing with them they will come along just fine . Good luck with your seedlings. P.s. Julia, I misread your original post. I didn't realize that you had just planted these DL's. They haven't been in the ground a month, correct? In that case, it is perfectly normal for them to drop a few buds. I'm surprised they even have scapes! And yes, you are correct...it is normal for the leaves to die back on newly planted DL's. Please disregard my previous post. I wouldn't worry about them this early....give them a year to settle into their new home.

Kathy has it totally correct.....Example...those that I sent you were cut back....Fans and scapes. Those will slowly die back. From the center of the clumps and each fan, new growth will appear. You should see it starting in about 2 weeks from planting. As she also said...you must water thoroughly. Too get the ground wet 2-8 inches below the crust, takes a great deal of water. To see how effective you are, do as Kathy said.....dig down a few inches about 6 inches out from your new planting. You may be suprised to see dry ground, even after standing there with a sprinkler/nozzle and thinking you had watered well. You want to insure the new plants get off to a good start so water real well. Once they are established it is "Ideal" to insure they get about an inch of water per week. Or you can do as I do with my Mother Nature Bed......"Plant it and forget it".....LOL Hope it survives...:) Hope this helps......

I'm more surprised than anyone that I have scapes. 3 plants from the same seller all have scapes and buds: Black Eyed Stella (which is actually blooming now),Raspberry Pixie and Red Magic.
I checked on a few more yesterday and saw that Ruffled Apricot and Wine Delight are sending up scapes as well.

I guess I'm a bit timid in watering as the fear of "over watering" lurks in the back of my mind. Thanks for the help/advice.
