juniperus deppeana problem

Here are some pics of one of my juniperus deppeana. The tips of the south-west exposure are starting to die in all of my trees. Something to worry about??

I don't know what to tell you about your tip problem, but may I ask where you got your J. deppeana? Do you have any seeds to share?

It looks similar to what some of my eastern red cedar experienced this summer with top leader. These were with trees that had been cut-over and transplanted and had more than one leader. I eventually cut off the diseased looking leader and increased watering slightly. Believe plant was stressed. Another healtier looking leader took over dominance by end of summer and problem appears to have gone away. Not sure how helpful that is.

Funny. I love my cats, but sometimes I'd like to aim something at them besides the water hose (just kidding). Thanks for the advice. Upon a walk of the garden yesterday, I have more browning issues and thought I'd better group my problems together in two questions on the discussion forum in case I have problems that are related on the plants in question. I covered the witchita blue, juniperus squamata holger, and juniperus chinensis blue point. Maybe you'd like to check those out and see what you think. Thanks. tess

juniperus occidentalis, calocedrus decurrens, cupressus??

I'm a bit confused why you have eliminated Calocedrus decurrens and Juniperus occidentalis from your list. Do you already have them and are looking for more trees like that or something else? I think both should do well for you, especially since I've seen both doing well in zone 6 Kansas. I've seen some Juniperus ashei with similar looking red bark, but it doesn't seem to be a uniform characteristic of that species. Ashe Juniper should grow well for you though. I've seen it growing on very dry South and West facing slopes and it's all over parts of the Ozarks and the Edward's Plateau.

hey jim... the roots on the branch have nothing to do with the branches.. per se ... ignore that issue if simply moving the plants .... in the past.. i have discovered where all the rooted in pieces are.. then cut on the plant side of the branch roots.. taken momma to a new home.. and left the severed branch there.. and then come back in fall and move your new plant ... figuring that leaving it there gives it better odds.. than moving it.. and thinking it can survive on its minimal roots .. the bigger problem on many of the horizontalis is trying to dig a reasonable sized root mass.. when the plant is covering a 3 foot circle ... good luck with that ... hopefully yours are still small enough to get a shovel under them ... good luck ken

Interested in J. Deppeana, but am not sure I'd have or can get anything you'd want that would do well in NM. Can get seeds from : Eastern Red Cedar, Ashe Juniper, Hinoki Cypress (in November), Bald Cypress, Loblolly and Shortleaf Pine, Shumard Red Oak, and Bur Oak. Seeds would be sourced from either La. or Tx. Send me an email if interested.

I dont believe my juniper has the same problem. The leader is very healthy, only one side is having the problem. The problem may be excessive humidity because this year we had more rain than normal.

I saved my trees from a certain death. I saved them before the bulldozers destroyed them. I do not have seeds yet, they are only 7' tall and growing very very fast. I will see if I can get some seeds for you

"Plants of the Southwest" is advertising they have alligator juniper seed. A web search for that name should turn up the web site.
