Large purple fig on Long Island

My friend has a large purple fig about 6 foot tall and round.

Tastes great. He has one more half the size on the other side of the yard. He puts grass clippings over the roots and there is no winter damage at all. What variety could it be? Can I take a cutting, remove the big leaves and root it in potting soil outside? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

What variety could it be?
With out pics of: inside and out of the figs, 3-5 different leaves, number of crops (1 or 2), your guess is as good as ours. WE LOVE LOOKING AT PICS, especially if the variety is one that we havent seen and tastes like heaven!

Yes, be sure not to over water it. Also, look up "horizontal method" within search box located at the bottom of the fig forum page. After doing all the reading, if there are any questions, please do ask. Also, for each question be sure to keep in mind there might be 5 different answers all of which are right.

If your friend likes you, I would instead ask to yank a sucker, and you are rockin an rolling in a much faster time.

Air rooting a limb would be a faster and easier way of getting a fig tree started this time of year. There is a lot of information on the fig forum on how to air root.

Guess nobody has BC#17 (IPR)! BUT I think I may have cracked the name. IPR is listed in both the old and the most current BC fig list. There is one other famous fig that is NOT listed, aka "Pop's Fig". Pop, being of course, the father, who very possibly brought a twig in his suitcase from day 1. Going through the literature, that I was given when I visited BC just before closing, there was an article written by Anne Raver. Quoting: This is Pop's tree, said Chris Dipaola, standing by an Italian Purple Red. She's 23 years [+++] old. Pop's grows out of a whisky barrel, and... Sooo, my guess is that Pop's = IPR(?) I do have a little specimen of Pop's, no fruit yet. Does anybody have a pic of the Pop's fruit? Here is one more 2007 pic of my unkown1 (which I forgot I had).

Ray Given's comment about,"Long Island" freezing was confusing to me also, considering that Ray Given's place is farther south then Long Island. But that is the reason we have decided to test as many hardy figs as we can here. I'm starting to think there are factors that we are not aware of that effect whether or not a fig is going to be hardy in certain locations. Since we already have a large orchard of other fruits & nuts, we thought it would be nice to have fig trees in the orchard that were as large as the ones KK of New Jersey found. Those fig trees appear to be at least 12 feet tall. KK said the owner told him that he covered the fig trees the first two years. There after he did not cover them. That was obvious, when you see how tall the trees were. I don't think the owner would have been able to cover trees that big any ways. The only way you can tell if a plant will grow in a certain area, is to test here. Over the years we have lost a lot of plants that were suppose to be hardy here. But, at the same time we have plants growing here that are not suppose to be hardy here. So far the biggest discovery we have made so far, when it comes to whether or not a plant can take our cold is how well it was fed during the early spring and with what. Bob

sheesh...and I just drove through NJ and NY in the past week. I did stop at Logees (unbelievable nursery, btw) but as I was planning on returning through Canada I didn't pick up anything (though I wasn't checked at either border). My wife would have been a wreck had I tried to sneak anything though. ~Chills

Oh I just read through a long thread that tells me to bury a whole chunk of wood underground. Now you say air rooting is best. Sigh. For now it is easier to take off a branch and snap a photo for I.D. I would like to plant(bury) this hardy purple fig right next to my growing baby brown turkey fig. How close together can I grow these two figs. My full sun growing space is limited. Thanks

Airlayering a branch on your friend's tree is DEFINITELY the way to go. It is virtually fool proof and very easy. If you search this forum you will find lots of information and instructions for airlayering. If you don't find them send me an email. This method is easy, quick, and will produce the most stable propagated new plant which will be almost a full year ahead of a plant you would get from rooting a cutting.

Dont forget if there is a sucker, get it out and pot it up. These are almost fool proof.
