Large purple fig on Long Island

My friend has a large purple fig about 6 foot tall and round.

Tastes great. He has one more half the size on the other side of the yard. He puts grass clippings over the roots and there is no winter damage at all. What variety could it be? Can I take a cutting, remove the big leaves and root it in potting soil outside? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

What variety could it be?
With out pics of: inside and out of the figs, 3-5 different leaves, number of crops (1 or 2), your guess is as good as ours. WE LOVE LOOKING AT PICS, especially if the variety is one that we havent seen and tastes like heaven!

Yes, be sure not to over water it. Also, look up "horizontal method" within search box located at the bottom of the fig forum page. After doing all the reading, if there are any questions, please do ask. Also, for each question be sure to keep in mind there might be 5 different answers all of which are right.

If your friend likes you, I would instead ask to yank a sucker, and you are rockin an rolling in a much faster time.

Air rooting a limb would be a faster and easier way of getting a fig tree started this time of year. There is a lot of information on the fig forum on how to air root.

Yes Rita, definitely scapes! I live on the south shore, suffolk county. One daylily is a very early blooming red I received from a daylily society sales years ago and I'll have to check on the other daylily that's just beginning scapes to see which one that is. The early red is unidentified, I actually saw its scape last week, tomorrow I'll check around some more. Sometimes your lilies start to bloom earlier than mine so I'm curious to see if you have some scapes lurking out there somewhere. My knockout's are starting to bloom, about a month or month and a half earlier than usual, especially the one's I didn't get a chance to prune yet...which may be the key. Lilacs (all types all at once this year) and quite a few clematis in bloom, some for awhile(Montanas) and some just starting (The President, etc), bacholar buttons, azelas, tree peony,and of course, forget me nots all over the place (but that's normal) Have all different types of bearded Iris, the dark purples are starting to phase out, but some of the others are poppin fresh, such as my yellow and soon to be pink (sorry, would have to check it's label for name). I have a pink and white blooming beautifully (again have to check the label) now. My Kousa dogwood is all budded up to my amazement for that usually blooms for July 4th weekend, not this year.

I like to think that figs are highly variable rather than view all the available data as conflicting. If you then factor in taste preferences, which are usually divided along the lines of those who like Brown Turkey types (Black Jack, etc) and those who don't, it's easy to see why some folks may get confused. The good news is that there are no bad figs (expect those that don't bare fruit). That said, I'm not sure if a long season fig is the right concept, and not in the same sense as apples and such. for a longer season you want to look for a variety with reliable breba crops and excellent main crops. That will give you the longer season most years, while weather and other factors will determine how long the main crop runs. This is why if you check out the DWN harvest chart, you will note that the fig section is a huge block with all the varieties lumped together. If you find a good breba crop fig you can start eating figs as early as June/July if conditions are right. VdB will keep going with main crop figs as long as the weather is warm enough into November. joeysquared : .... you probably forgot more about growing plants than I'll ever know ! You mention that you have small growing areas, and that you cultivate all your plants for maximum yields. I too, face this same problem. I grow my fig trees on a (15 ft. X 9 ft.) back deck, that's has full sun all year. When it's time to start growing the fig trees, I pull the trees out of my unheated storage shed, schlep the containerized fig trees up a 50 ft. driveway, then up three steps, to a small front porch, lift the container in through my front door, and then wheel the trees through my living room, into my kitchen, then out the through the sliding-doors, onto the back deck. That's where they stay all Summer until fall dormancy. It's a real pain-in-the butt to move the trees, and many people suggested that I should definately go have my head examined! Do I need a hernia because of some fig-trees ???? Anyway that's what I do. I planted all three of my trees into one large container to maximize fruiting potential into a small space. All three stems are within a few inches of one another, and I tied all three stems together with soft fiber rope, making one thicker, composite trunk supporting a nice rack of fruiting branches on top. So, instead of three large containers with each having its' own tree, I now have only one large container to worry about. More bang for the buck, and, in one third the space ! But, I digress ..... Oh I just read through a long thread that tells me to bury a whole chunk of wood underground. Now you say air rooting is best. Sigh. For now it is easier to take off a branch and snap a photo for I.D. I would like to plant(bury) this hardy purple fig right next to my growing baby brown turkey fig. How close together can I grow these two figs. My full sun growing space is limited. Thanks

Airlayering a branch on your friend's tree is DEFINITELY the way to go. It is virtually fool proof and very easy. If you search this forum you will find lots of information and instructions for airlayering. If you don't find them send me an email. This method is easy, quick, and will produce the most stable propagated new plant which will be almost a full year ahead of a plant you would get from rooting a cutting.

Dont forget if there is a sucker, get it out and pot it up. These are almost fool proof.
