MeMo: I believe there is a thread on the gallery where people have been posting their birdhouses. You might find some inspiration there regarding how to mount yours.

I took a large dowel (3/4") from the craft store and attached my birdhouses to that. You can use a pipe fitting to screw into the bottom of the birdhouse. Then insert the dowel into that. I used some wood glue to hold it in place firmly. I've never had a problem with mine falling off and they've been outisde for three seasons. Best of all, it cost only a few dollars per birdhouse.

A few inexpensive possibilities [most under $10 each]:

- pressure treated 2x2s
- heavy duty pvc pipe [~1"] with flange
- steel fencing T or U posts [already painted green, and are easily installed
- pressure treated 'rail fence' posts
- closet or shower curtain rods [metal]
- used or recycled whenever possible!!!

If your birdhouses are 'for looks' and not actually for the birds, the height wouldn't be so critical: so an 8' 2x2 might give you two posts...hope this helps! Linda

I bet spray paint for metal would probably work. I've used it on various projects in my garden including ones with weird or so-called unpaintable coatings with good, long-lasting results.

I used two porch rail lathed spindles which gives it a more decorative look and one 2x2 which is the end that goes in the ground. Just attached them all with brackets. Got this idea from Nicki. Spent less than $10.

Thank you for all the great ideas everyone. A friend came over today and we discussed this at great length. I believe I'm going to use some Red Cedar posts and attach them with little "L" brackets to the bottom of the houses. I really had visions of fancy little lathed spindles or porch posts in my head but in talking it over I think the cedar posts will fit my very rustic country garden best. I'll be sure to post pics when I get it all together.

Since the style of my house is 1970's ranch I don't dare get too fancy schmancy with my birdhouses. Truth be told, I dismantled every birdfeeder, house and hotel the previous owner's left behind. I don't recall how many there were, but it was a lot.

I have one garden that is dedicated to birds. It has a simple finch house (a Lowe's special), birdbath and a birdfeeder hung from one of two oak trees. For a simple styled house, it does the job.

If you want something a bit more girlish I'd suggest looking in antique shops, yard sales and online. Houses that look antiqued always have more charm. Just be careful of the price tag. I have a hard time swallowing a $50 price tag for a house that birds may or may not move in to.
