' Floppy Black Eyed Susans'

Anyone ever deal with this? I planted about two boxes of that granular stuff. Wildflowe mix. From the American Seed Co, Norton, Mass. Excellent stuff. The only problem alot of my Black Eyed Susans flop over after rains. The bed looks lovely. Though it would look better without the floppy flowers. Any ideas?

I've got about 60 plants in my front bed that I started from seed, a lot of them are flopped over. Some of them laid over even before they were blooming and then curved up and started growing back up again. I love the color and have always loved black eyed susans but they just might be too messy looking for my taste.

When do you cut them back or do you? Mine have been blooming for a while now but I'm not sure how long they will bloom.

Hi Hollyhocker,
I have had trouble with the Gloriosa daisy type of Black Eyed Susans falling over. Also, the goldfinches enjoy them so much that they have broken some of the stems and pulled the flowers apart. A couple of weeks ago I was talking with another gardener in my area about how these flowers seem to be fragile stemmed. He showed me his Gloriosa daisies and then compared them to his Goldsturm Black Eyed Susans. I could hardly believe the differences! The Goldsturm is so strong and bushy! So, I got a large clump from him and it has been in my yard about a week. We have had several days of heavy rain during this last week, and the Goldsturm is standing straight and tall, even with being newly transplanted! I don't know a lot about the various cultivars of rudbeckia, but I'm thrilled that Goldsturm sure seems to be able to take the wind and rain. :)

I have two patches of rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' that are eight years old. The patch in the front of the house is fine. The patch in the back is gone. A theory of mine is that the front received more water and late afternoon shade during the drought last year. The patch in the back was drier and blasted by sun all day. That patch did look bad last fall. Though they're drought tolerant, I think the lack of water maybe did them in, though the echinacea next to them are coming up fine. It is kind of weird, I must say.

It is hard to know what to recommend without knowing the pathogen. Can you describe how the leaf is affected more? Are there spots? a coating? totally black? scorched? Can you post a pic? Are they only affected in one part of the yard? Do you have healthy plants elsewhere? Personally, if they have a fungus that reappears each year, I would dig them up, throw them out and get another plant. If there is one plant that gardeners try to find homes for, it is their divisions of black eyed susans.

It's some kind of leaf disease or fungus, I can't remember the exact name. They still bloom, but looks ugly up close. I've started to yank them from my gardens due to the same thing. I do a full cleanup in the fall of all BES, but it hasn't helped curb the disease...so out they go. Such a shame, too, since they offer such a nice end of summer color.

To be truthfully honest, these days I'm getting the feeling that the names of some of the newer perennials coming out are the breeding groups and not cultivated variety name. For instance I have an origami columbine that I thought was going to be light blue spurred and blue cupped. One of the plants in the pot is and another is yellow with orange spurs. I've also seen Indian Summer BES's that are like indian blankets and not like the two described above. The oddity looks like a BES and a mexican hat. On related note to composite flowers, I found a mexican hat that has all yellow ray flowers with not a hint of black spotting.
