Many of us have this problem. Birds are bad enough, but pesky squirrels are way smarter, and won't fall for simple netting over the trees. I keep watching a squirrel on my fence right over my fig trees, but haven't detected any losses from him - yet.
Once they get a hankering for figs, there is no stopping them. Bummer. I like the little critters myself, but some folks I know have poisoned squirrels to be rid of them.
Nobody has made a squirrel proof bird feeder that truly keeps out he quirrels. What hope have we to make them leave peacefully?
Anybody got a suggestion which does not include a slow cooker?
I just dig a hole and turn them into fertilizer. I'm not complaining but so far nothing has figured out that figs taste good except me. At least hasn't lived to tell about it.
I use a fake owl near next to both my Fig and Citrus trees. Works like a charm. The key is to change its position every couple of days so the critters and birds will not trip over an epiphany, realize it's fake, and gorge themselves.
Dried Blood fertilizer is also good to keep squirrels away. It's made of ground up dead cows and once wet, it scares the hell out of them. Might attract dogs though. Don't put it in any container that will come back inside unless you like maggots and other parasites. Just spread it nearby and wet.
